No. 14 Men's Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to Ninth-Ranked Grand Canyon

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The No. 14 McKendree University men's volleyball team fell in four sets to ninth-ranked Grand Canyon here Saturday evening at GCU Arena. 

The Bearcats fell in the first two sets 25-19 and 25-22 before winning the third set 25-22 and then falling 25-14 in the fourth set. 

The Bearcats struggled on offense as they hit .102 for the match, while Grand Canyon hit .300 for the match.

McKendree was led offensively by redshirt junior middle blocker Jacob Gall (Fairview Heights, Ill./Althoff Catholic) who recorded a career high 10 kills in the match and hit .500. Graduate student outside hitter Patrick Ross (Anthem, Ariz./Boulder Creek) also recorded 10 in the match. Freshman outside hitter Kevin Schuele (Aurora, Ill./Saint Francis) saw his first career action and recorded a career high of eight kills. Graduate student outside hitter Ethan Carroll (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) added seven kills. Redshirt senior setter Ryan Serrano (Phoenix, Ariz./Boulder Creek) had 38 assists and three kills. 

On defense the Bearcats were led by Ross and Carroll as they were the only Bearcats to record double-digit digs with Ross recording 11 and Carroll added 10 digs. Gall added six blocks with two block solos and four block assists. Ross added one solo block and two block assists, while Carroll also added a block assist.  

Grand Canyon was led by Camden Gianni who recorded 14 kills while Hugo Fischer added 12 kills. Heath Hughes recorded 39 assists for Grand Canyon along with five kills. 

The Bearcats return to action on Friday, Jan. 21 as they open the home portion of its 2022 schedule with a 7 p.m. non-conference match at the Melvin Price Convocation Center against Central State (Ohio) University.
