No.19 Women's Soccer Survives with Two Second Half Goals

Bearcats defeat UIndy in GLVC Tournament Quarterfinal

LENBANON, Ill. - No.19 and second-seeded McKendree University women's soccer (13-0-5, 8-0-4 GLVC) made a comeback to claim a 2-1 victory in the quarterfinal round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Sunday afternoon, defeating the seventh-seeded Indianapolis Greyhounds. The Bearcats put up two scores in the second 45 minutes of action as junior forward Anna Stiffler (13) and senior defender Morgan Bova (2) each fired a goal to win the outing. With the win, McKendree moves onto the GLVC Semifinal round, which will now be hosted at Leemon Field after the top-seeded Rockhurst Hawks dropped their tournament-opener to UMSL, 2-1. The remainder of the championship tournament will be hosted at McKendree and Leemon Field with the semifinal contests being played on Friday, November 4, and the championship on Sunday, November 6.

The Bearcats went down 1-0 in the first half to the Greyhounds following a penalty kick goal by Indianapolis in the 31st minute. The Hounds held the 10 advantage into the halftime intermission period.

McKendree evened the matchup in the 49th minute of action behind a build-up by its forwards with junior forwards Destiny Johnson and Anna Stiffler connecting for the score. It marked Stiffler's 13th goal of the season and Johnson's fourth assist of the year.

The quarterfinal matchup remained knotted at one goal a piece until the 66th minute. McKendree collected its second goal off a restarting free kick from the defender Bova, who lauched the shot at goal, clipping the crossbar and dropping to the back of the net. The goal by Bova proved to be the eventual game-winner.

The Bearcats held off the Greyhounds aggressive pushes, preventing more scores from the visiting Hounds.

McKendree managed to out-shoot the Hounds 14 (6) to 5 (4) while earning seven corners on the day.

Stiffler led with five shots on the day while sophomore forward Lena Higgins and junior midfielder Katie Spotanski each fired three in the outing.
