COLUMBIA, Mo. – The McKendree University women's swimming & diving team concluded competition here Friday on the third and final day of the Mizzou Invitational held at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
On the final day of action, the Bearcat women set two new school records and had five Top 7 finishes.
McKendree scored a total of 458 points at the event to finish in fourth place out of six teams. McKendree was the lone Division II team competing in the event. Missouri won the team title with 1,488 points, while Brigham Young was second with 746 points.
Friday's finals began with the 1,650 freestyle as the first school record fell in the event as freshman
Ana Cecilia Carvalho (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Loyola) finished sixth with a school record time of 17:04.86. The time blitzed the old school mark of 17.23.38 set by Hallie Dixon at the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships. In addition to Carvalho, freshman
Natalia Kralova (Poprad, Slovakia/Gymnasium Ivana Horvatha) was eighth with a time of 17:37.94.
The next event was the 200 backstroke as sophomore
Caitlyn Sligh (Tomball, Texas/Tomball Memorial) was second in the 'B' Final and 10th overall in the event with a time of 2:05.81.
Sophomore
Karley Sonnenberg (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) posted a 10th place overall in the 'B' Final of the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.97. Freshman
Jocelyn Zgola (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale) and sophomore
Sarah Gormley (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces) were 13th and 14th overall with times of 51.90 and 52.06.
The next school record to fall came in the 200 breaststroke as senior
Grace Credit (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township) set a record of 2:20.48 to finish in 10th place overall or second in the 'B' Final. Her time bettered the old mark of 2:21.33 set by Credit at last year's Purdue Invitational.
Freshman
Keianna Moss (Nassau, Bahamas/Focus Point Academy) was seventh with a time of 2:05.58 in the 'A' Final of the 200 butterfly.
The final event of the meet was the 400 freestyle realay as McKendree had three of their teams finish in the Top 8 as the 'A' Team of Sonnenberg, junior
Alexis Kachkin (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South), Zgola and fifth year senior
Abigail Rumpp (Knoxville, Tenn./L&N STEM Academy) placed fifth with a time of 3:26.30. The 'B' Team of Gormley, sophomore
Aurora Abbruscato (Reggio Emilia, Italy/I.I.S. Blaise Pascal), Carvalho and redshirt freshman
McKenzie Fazio (Eagle River, Alaska/Eagle River) were seventh with time of 3:28.82 and the 'C' Team of Kralova, freshman
Olivia Fuller (Coolidge, Antigua/St. Anthony's), Moss and senior
Emily Drabick (Barto, Pa./Florida Southern) were eighth with a time of 3:33.18.
This meet concluded the first semester portion of its schedule and the Bearcats will send several swimmers to compete at the USA Swimming's Toyota US Open held in Greensboro, N.C., on Nov. 30-Dec. 3. The first meet of the second semester is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 13 as the Bearcats compete in a dual meet against Lindenwood at the St. Peters Rec Plex in St. Peters, Mo.
