Men's Volleyball Comeback Falls Short at Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - McKendree University men's volleyball three match winning streak ended after the Bearcats fell short of another comeback from down two sets as the Bearcats fell 3-2 at the Gates Sports Center on the campus of Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday night. 

The Bearcats fell 25-23 in the first two sets before winning 27-25 in the third set and 26-24 in the fourth set before falling 15-12 in the fifth. With the loss the Bearcats fall to 7-5 and 4-2 in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play while the Mastodons improved to 10-6 and 4-2 in MIVA play. 

Offensively, the Bearcats had five players record six or more kills including three with double figures. The Bearcats also had a season high of 56 kills in the five-set loss. 

Graduate student outside hitters Patrick Ross (Anthem, Ariz./Boulder Creek) and Ethan Carroll (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) each recorded 15 kills. Redshirt senior outside hitter Brendon Dunn (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Notre Dame) recorded a career-high 11 kills. Redshirt junior middle blocker Jacob Gall (Fairview Heights, Ill./Althoff Catholic) recorded seven kills while redshirt junior middle blocker Daniel Duggan (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) recorded six kills in his first career start. Redshirt senior setter Ryan Serrano recorded a season-high 49 assists. 

Carroll recorded three serve aces while Serrano added two aces. 

The Bearcats had four players record at least eight digs with Ross going for 13, Dunn recorded 12, Serrano added 11, and senior libero Francisco Comas (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) added eight. Serrano added four block assists and one solo block while Duggan and Gall had four block assists each. 

Serrano recorded his fourth double-double of the season and the 15th of his career, while Ross recorded his third double-double of the season and seventh of his career, while Dunn recorded his first career double-double. 

Purdue Fort Wayne was led by Vicente Ibarra as he recorded a game-high 22 kills while Rico Wardlow, John Diedrich and Zach Solomon recorded 12 kills each. The Mastodons recorded 66 kills in the match. 

The Bearcats return to action next Friday, March 4 at 7 p.m. at the Melvin Price Convocation Center as the Bearcats host the Pepperdine University Waves.
