Women's Hockey Defeats Local-Foe Lindenwood in Sunday Evening Matchup

Bearcats record first win of 2022 in first action since January 19

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. - McKendree University women's hockey added a hard-fought victory to its resume on Sunday night with a 4-3 win over Lindenwood. It was the Bearcats first action since January 19th and marked their first win of the 2022 calendar year.

McKendree went up 1-0 in the contest in the ninth minute (11:49) via a score from freshman forward Isobelle Hobbs, assisted by freshman defender Cassidy Dion. Less than two minutes after the game-opening score from Hobbs, the Bearcats struck once again with a goal from junior wing Quinn Atchison, putting the Bearcats up 2-0 over the hosting Lions. The goal from Atchison was assisted on by junior center Camryn Scully and freshman defender Lainy Stienstra. McKendree managed to hold the lead through the remainder of the first period even after a Lindenwood score at the 4:54 mark and went into intermission with a 2-1 advantage.

In the second period, the Bearcats picked up a similar pace as the first period, firing two goals in the 20 minute session. The first goal of the period and third of the game for McKendree was fired by junior forward Juliana Davis and assisted on by Scully and Stienstra, once again. The score held true at 3-1 in favor of the visiting Bearcats over the next 12 minutes but McKendree fought to extend its lead further and did so at the 5:43 mark of the second period. In the 15th minute of the period, freshman forward Kiley Hasenfratz gathered the puck and collected a fourth score for the Bearcats, which was assisted on by freshman defender Makenna Howe. Hasenfratz's goal in the second period gave McKendree a 4-1 advantage and some slight breathing room.

In the final five minutes of action, the Lions found two goals in the 18th minute, approximately 30 seconds apart yet were unable to find the final tying goal in the last minute and a half of action.

In regards to efforts and result of the contest, Bearcats head coach Derek Pallardy said, "There was a great collective effort from our team and the players stepped up to the challenges throughout the game to get the job done. It's always great to see them get rewarded for those efforts."
