LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree University men's volleyball picked up their 10th win of the season with a hard fought five set win over No. 12 Lewis at the Melvin Price Convocation Center on Saturday night.
The Bearcats improved to 10-8 on the season and 5-3 in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association while Lewis fell to 11-9 and 3-5 in MIVA play.
The Bearcats fell 25-19 in set one, before winning set two 25-22, then fell in set three 25-22, before winning set four 25-11 and set five 15-13.
Offensively, the Bearcats had five players record eight or more kills in the match. Graduate student outside hitter Ethan Carroll (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) led the Bearcats with 21 kills while graduate student Patrick Ross (Anthem, Ariz./Boulder Creek) recorded 17 kills. Freshman outside hitter Kevin Schuele (Aurora, Ill./Saint Francis) recorded 10 kills. Redshirt junior middle blocker Daniel Duggan (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) had eight kills while redshirt senior middle blocker Tommy McGrath (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) recorded eight kills. Redshirt senior setter Ryan Serrano (Phoenix, Ariz./Boulder Creek) recorded 48 assists. Freshman libero Tyler Tripp (Hanover Park, Ill./Glenbard North) recorded two of the three Bearcat serve aces as Ross added one.
Defensively, the Bearcats recorded a season-high 57 digs with five Bearcats recording eight or more digs. Serrano recorded a team-high 14 digs, while senior libero Francisco Comas (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) added 11 digs along with Ross and Schuele also adding 11 digs. Carroll added eight digs in the match. The Bearcats also recorded 11.5 team total blocks as Carroll, Duggan, and McGrath recorded four block assists each, while Serrano recorded three solo blocks and three block assists, and Ross added two block assists.
Serrano recorded his sixth double-double of the season and the 17th of his career, while Ross recorded his fifth double-double of the season and eighth of his career, and Schuele recorded his first career double-double.
Lewis was led by Tyler Mitchem as he recorded 15 kills while John Davis added 13 kills. Jaso Gibbs recorded a match-high 17 digs.
The Bearcats return to action on Thursday, March 24 at 7 p.m. in Chicago to play Loyola University Chicago.
