Women's Water Polo Falls to Biola, CSUN in Friday's Convergence Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif. –  McKendree women's water polo opened play here Friday in the Convergence Tournament by suffering back-to-back setbacks to Biola University and 25th-ranked Cal State-Northridge at the Axelrood Aquatics Center.
 
The Bearcats (6-3) opened the day with a 22-8 loss to Biola, before suffering an 11-4 loss to CSUN.
 
In the two games, the Bearcats got four goals on 11 shots and a steal from senior center Abigail Burton (Chino, Calif./Chino), while senior center defender Danielle Borelli (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) had three goals on nine shots and five steals. The other only Bearcat with multi goals on the day was freshman center Sofia Dominguez (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson).
 
GAME 1 RECAP – BIOLA 22, McKENDREE 8
The Eagles jumped in front 5-1 in the first period and added four goals in the second period to hold a 9-4 lead at the half. The Eagles would put the game out of reach in the third period as they outscored the Bearcats, 8-3, in the period and then outscored McKendree, 5-1 in the fourth period.
 
Biola jumped in front 5-0 in the first period, before Rodrigue scored the Bearcats first goal late in the period.
 
Borelli, Burton and Scanlon would each score goals in the second period for the Bearcats, while Borelli and Dominguez scored all three of McKendree's third period goals. Borelli would add a goal in the fourth period for the Bearcats.
 
Boreilli (7) and Burton (6) combined for 13 of McKendree's 31 shots in the game. Biola finished with 33 shots in the win.
 
Rachel Spadt led the way in scoring for the Eagles with five goals, while Kourtney Pyle added four goals and two assists and Hanna Jordan tallied four goals and an assist.
 
Freshman Sydney Kane (Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) and sophomore Kaitlyn Kasper (Thomasville, Ga./Thomasville) each played in goal for the Bearcats as Kane played 24 minutes and allowed 17 goals and made one save and had one steal. Kasper allowed five goals, had one save and one steal.
 
Alicia Fregoso played 24 minutes in goal and allowed eight goals and eight aves, while Samantha Rainey didn't allow a goal, but recorded two steals and made two saves.

GAME 2 – CSUN 11, McKENDREE 4
Much like its earlier game on Friday against Biola, the Bearcats got down early against the Matadors as CSUN scored seven first period goals to lead 7-1 after the first eight minutes of the game. Burton scored the Bearcats lone goal in the period with 2:03 left in the period.
 
The Matadors would outscore the Bearcats, 5-0, in the second period to hold a 12-1 lead at the half.
 
Trailing 12-1, the Bearcats used goals from freshman attacker Hailey Price (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) and Burton scored to outscore CSUN 2-0 in the period to trail 12-3 after three periods.
 
Burton would score the Bearcats' final goal with 1:08 left in the game to cut CSUN's lead to 12-4, before Tatiana Smeltzer capped the scoring with a goal with 50 seconds left in the game.
 
Burton scored three of McKendree's four goals against CSUN. CSUN got two goals each from Carly Bockstahler, Helena Sandhagen and Dorottya Telek in the win.
 
Kane played all 32 minutes in goal as she recorded seven saves and had three steals against the Matadors. Meghan Lopez played all 32 minutes in goal for CSUN and made nine saves and added a steal.
 
CSUN outshot the Bearcats, 23-21, while the Matadors were 4-for-4 on power-plays and McKendree was 0-for-1.

McKendree Saves: Kane 7.
 
The Bearcats will conclude play in the Convergence Tournament with a 12:20 p.m. CT game on Saturday, March 5 against Occidental College and a 4:20 p.m. CT game against Caltech. Both games will be played in Los Angeles, Calif.
