Johnson Claims Second Career GLVC Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week Accolade

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – McKendree University graduate student Oriana Johnson (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) took home her second career Great Lakes Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor on Monday as announced by the league office.

Johnson is the third different Bearcat to earn Player of the Week honors for women's lacrosse season this year as junior attacker Sydney Tiemann (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) and junior goalie Clara Andrews (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) earning GLVC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors on Feb. 28. Johnson was also named the GLVC Defensive Player of the Week on March 15, 2021.

Johnson earns this week's GLVC Defensive Player of the Week accolade after her stellar play in McKendree's two GLVC wins last weekend against Maryville and Quincy. On the week, she recorded 10 draw controls, grabbed four ground balls and caused five turnovers in the two victories. In addition, Johnson also added eight goals, including scoring five goals in a 20-10 win over Maryville.

On the season, Johnson leads the Bearcats in caused turnovers (16), is fourth in ground balls (17) and third in draw controls (21). Additionally, she is third in goals scored with 29 and her 32 points are also third-most on the team.

Meanwhile, the league named Indianapolis graduate student Abigail Lagos as the GLVC Offensive Player of the Week after she tallied 22 points on 18 goals and four assists in UIndy's three wins last week. With her 18 goals, she eclipsed the 200-goal career milestone. Lagos, who earns her fifth honor this season and eighth in her career, scored eight goals against Notre Dame and had five each against Rockhurst and Missouri Western.

Johnson and the rest of the Bearcat (6-6 overall, 2-1 GLVC) return to action this coming week as they travel to Kansas City, Mo., for a 5 p.m. match against Rockhurst on Thursday, April 14, before concluding the two-match road trip on Saturday, April 16 with a 1 p.m. match in St. Joseph, Mo., against Missouri Western.
