Women's Lacrosse Drops 11-10 Overtime Heartbreaker at Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The McKendree women's lacrosse team had its two game win streak snapped here Thursday afternoon as the Bearcats suffered a hard-fought 11-10 overtime loss to Rockhurst University in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Bourke Field on the Rockhurst campus.

The overtime game was the first this season for the Bearcats and the loss dropped McKendree's record to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the GLVC, while Rockhurst improved to 8-5 and 3-1 in the league.

Prior to Thursday's game, the Bearcats had won two straight and three of its last four games overall with the lone loss being a 21-6 setback on April 2 at then fourth-ranked Lindenwood.

In Thursday's game, the Bearcats trailed 8-5 just a little more than two-plus minutes into the third period, but McKendree would score three straight goals to tie the game at 8-all after three periods.

Both teams scored two goals each in the fourth period, including using a goal by junior midfielder Aly Curran (Bolton, Mass./Southern New Hampshire) off an assist from junior attacker Kat Albrecht (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) to tie the game with 5:18 left in regulation.

Albrecht had a shot on goal with about 81 seconds left in the game that would've given the Bearcats the lead, but Rockhurst goalie Madeline Morrison made a save on the play to keep the game tied.

In the overtime period, junior Sydney Tiemann (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) won the opening draw control, but on that possession, graduate student midfielder Oriana Johnson (Monticello, Minn./Monticello), who was named this week's GLVC Defensive Player of the Week, turned the ball over just 31 seconds into overtime and about 50 seconds later, Kelly Marion launched shot towards the goal and the ball went into the net to give the Hawks the 11-10 victory.

It appeared early on that overtime wouldn't be needed in Thursday's contest as RU jumped out to a 3-0 lead just two-plus minutes into the game. The Bearcats, though, would rally behind three straight goals from Albrecht to tie the game at 3-all. Albrecht finished the game with five goals and has now scored 166 career goals, including a team-best 56 goals this season. She also had two assists for the Bearcats.

Rockhurst, though, would open the second period by scoring three of the first four goals to take a 6-4 lead with six minutes left in the period. Johnson would pull the Bearcats within a goal following her unassisted goal with 5:33 remaining in the second period.

Logan Derosia gave the Hawks a 7-5 lead on her goal off an assist from Christine Corbin with 2:11 left in the opening half. Rockhurst led 7-5 at the half.

In addition to Albrecht's five goals, Curran scored three goals, all of which, came in the second half to aid in the Bearcats' comeback.

Helen Kruse led Rockhurst with four goals, while Dani Mabry, Derosia and Marion each had two goals in the win for the Hawks.

Each team recorded 29 shots in the game as Albrecht took 11 shots, while Tiemann had six shots and Curran and her sister, freshman midfielder Shauna Curran (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional), each took five shots for the Bearcats. Mackenzie Blair led RU with nine shots and Krause added six shots in the win.

McKendree won the draw control battle, 13-11 as Tiemann had seven of those draw controls, but Rockhurst held a 17-13 edge in ground balls and the Bearcats committed 22 turnovers in the game, including Rockhurst being credited for 14 caused turnovers. The Bearcats had 11 caused turnovers as Rockhurst finished with 18 turnovers.

Sophomore defender Olivia Julian (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) had four of McKendree's 11 caused turnovers.

McKendree was 3-for-6 on free position shots, while Rockhurst finished 0-for-3 on free position shots in the game.

Junior goalie Clara Andrews (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) played all 61-plus minutes between the pipes for the Bearcats and recorded 11 saves and had three ground balls.

Rockhurst used two goalies in the game as Sydney Shindler played the first half and allowed five goals and made three saves, while Morrison played the second half and allowed five goals, but made six saves, picked up four ground balls and caused two turnovers.

The Bearcats will look to get back on track on Saturday, April 16 as they travel to St. Joseph, Mo., for an 11 a,.m. GLVC contest against Missouri Western State University.
