CHESTERFIELD, Mo. - McKendree University baseball (11-20, 6-7 GLVC) dropped the first of a four-game series, 14-10, to the Maryville Saints (19-15, 8-5 GLVC) after firing a pair of three-run homers in the first inning. The opening game of the Great Lakes Valley Conference series featured home runs senior infielder
Alex Steinbach (x2), sophomore outfielder
Joseph Copeland, senior outfielder
Corey Price, and junior outfielder
Katom Parnell.
The Bearcats collected six runs in the first inning with Copeland kicking things off with a three-run homer to right, which brought in Steinbach and freshman infielder
Gavin Arseneau. McKendree went right back at in the second inning with another three-run homer, this time from Steinbach, bringing in senior outfielder
Ryan Hutchinson and Arseneau. The home run knock by Copeland marked his 12th of the spring while it was Steinbach's 11th on the year.
The hosting Saints went at the pitching staff of McKendree next, scoring seven runs in the third inning, taking the lead, 7-6 over the Bearcats. The one-run lead did not last long as McKendree tied the game at 7-7 with a walked-in run by Copeland.
In the latter innings of the game, it became a back-and-forth contest with Maryville re-taking the lead in the fourth and adding another run in the seventh, 9-7. McKendree then tied the game in the eighth, 9-9, behind Steinbach's second homer of the day and a bomb by Price.
The Saints proceeded to score five in the bottom half of the eighth, taking a 14-9 lead over the visitor.
