The Bearcats saw their 2022 season come to a close Saturday evening following a 3-1 MIVA Tournament Quarterfinal setback to Purdue Fort Wayne. The Bearcats closed the season with a 14-11 record and were third in the MIVA.

Men's Volleyball Falls in MIVA Quarterfinals to Purdue Fort Wayne

LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree University men's volleyball fell in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Quarterfinals on Saturday night to Purdue Fort Wayne in four sets at the Melvin Price Convocation Center. 

The Bearcats end the season with a 14-11 overall record while Purdue Fort Wayne improved to 16-12 and will advance to the MIVA Semifinals to play No. 2 seeded Loyola Chicago. 

The difference in the match was the Mastodons recorded a .317 hitting percentage while the Bearcats only hit .231. 

The Bearcats offense was led by graduate student outside hitter Patrick Ross (Anthem, Ariz./Bouler Creek) and graduate student opposite side hitter Ethan Carroll (Barrington, Ill/Barrington) as they both recorded a game-high 20 kills each. For Ross, those 20 kills were a career-high in a match. Redshirt senior setter Ryan Serrano (Phoenix, Ariz./Boulder Creek) recorded 45 assists in the match. 

Freshman outside hitter Kevin Schuele (Aurora, Ill./Saint Francis) recorded a team-high and tied his career-high with 12 digs. Serrano added 10 digs in the match while Ross added seven digs. The Bearcats recorded 6.5 total team blocks. 

The Mastodons were led by Jon Diedrich and Vicente Ibarra as they both recorded 18 kills in the match. Kade Bontrager recorded a game-high 19 digs in the match.  

Notes: 

Ross and Carroll will finish in a tie for the most kills in a single season as they recorded 327 kills this season passing Jared Wilcox (320 kills in 2015). Ross will finish his career with 980 kills and 79 aces and will graduate as the school record holder in both categories. The Bearcats finished with a school record 14 wins and recorded their third straight winning season.
