LEBANON, Ill. – McKendree University women's lacrosse outscored Lewis University here Friday evening 12-3 in the first half en route to cruising to 20-5 victory over the Flyers in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Leemon Field.
With the win, McKendree improved to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in the GLVC and secured the Bearcats' spot in next week's GLVC Tournament. Lewis fell to 4-9 overall and 2-4 in the GLVC.
In Friday's game, junior attackers
Sydney Tiemann (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) and
Kat Albrecht (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) combined for 12 goals as Tiemann finished with seven and Albrecht added five. Graduate student midfielder
Oriana Johnson (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) tallied four goals in the win.
With her seven goals, Tiemann and Albrecht moved into a tie for the team lead in goals on the season with 62, while Johnson has scored 39 goals on the year. Combined, those three players have combined to score 163 of McKendree's 204 goals on the year.
The 20 goals marked the third time this season that McKendree had scored at least 20 goals in a game.
The Bearcats held a 45-16 advantage in shots, including a 31-13 edge in shots on goal and held a 19-8 edge in draw controls as Tiemann tied a season high with 13 in the win.
Both teams finished with 10 turnovers on the night and the Bearcats recorded 16 ground balls, including three by Tiemann. Lewis had seven ground balls in the game.
After Lewis scored the first goal of the game by Lindsey Traub just 100 seconds into the contest, the Bearcats would close the opening period by scoring the next eight goals to lead 8-1 after the opening 15 minutes of play. Tiemann (4) and Albrecht (2) combined to score six of McKendree's eight goals.
Tiemann and Johnson scored the first two goals of the second period to take a 10-1 lead just four-plus minutes into the period. Lewis would then score two straight goals, before the Bearcats used a free position by Johnson and a goal from Tiemann with 48 seconds left to give the Bearcats its 12-3 halftime lead.
The Bearcats would score five straight goals in the third period to jump in front 17-3 and put the clock into running mode the remainder of the night. Albrecht scored three of the Bearcats' five third period goals.
Lewis capped the scoring in the third period with a free position goal by Jamie Reiger with two seconds left.
The Bearcats would add three more goals in the fourth period, including Tiemann capping the scoring on an unassisted goal with 29 seconds remaining.
Traub paced Lewis with two goals, while three other Flyers scored a goal on the night.
McKendree was 5-for-12 on free position shots in the game, while Lewis was 1-for-5 on free position shots.
Junior goalkeeper Clara Andews (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) played 45 minutes between the pipes as she allowed four goals and made four saves and had two ground balls. Sophomore
Gretchen Kuhn (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) played the final period in goal as she allowed one goal and made four saves.
Brigid Fornek was one of three Flyers to play in goal on the night as she allowed eight goals and made one save.
The Bearcats will close the 2022 regular season with a 1 p.m. home game at Leemon Field on Sunday, April 24 against No. 3 ranked University of Indianapolis. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. UIndy opened the 2022 season with a 19-3 win over the Bearcats in Indianapolis on Feb. 18.
