Fung and Leston Claim Flight 'C' Doubles Title at ITA Midwest Regional Championships

Mantilla and Velasco Playing in Monday Flight 'B' Doubles Semifinals

GREENWOOD, Ind. – The McKendree men's tennis team posted a 5-2 record on the second day of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Indianapolis and held at Center Grove High School, Center Grove Middle School, and Clark-Pleasant Middle School.
 
On Sunday's second day of action, the Bearcats had two players competing in the Flight 'A' Singles Draw as they went a combined 1-2, while their two doubles teams that competed went a perfect 4-0 with one of the teams claiming the Flight 'C' Doubles title.
 
In doubles, the team of senior Ryan Fung (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior) and sophomore Tomas Leston (Buenos Aires, Argentina/San Jose Hermanas Nuestra Senora de Rosario) went 2-0 on Sunday to claim the Flight 'C' doubles championship following an 8-3 win in the final over William Jewell's team of Julien Lafranchise and Loris Carret. Fung and Leston advanced to the finals with an 8-6 win over the No. 1 seeded team of Axel Sabourin and David Julia from the University of Indianapolis.
 
The other doubles team that went 2-0 on Sunday came in the Flight 'B' Doubles Draw was sophomore David Leon Mantilla (Lima, Peru/Colegio Parroquial Santa Rosa de Lima) and sophomore Jose Antonio Velasco (Lima, Peru), who will play in Monday's semifinal round against the No. 2 seeded team of Jason Gerweck and Pedro Romano Franca. On Sunday, Mantilla and Velasco opened the day with an 8-2 win in the Round of 16 against Purdue Northwest's team of Luis Alvear and Luca Kirchoff and then picked up an 8-6 win in the quarterfinals over Davenport's duo of Joel Mast and Subash Paramasivam. The Flight 'B' Doubles final is scheduled for Monday afternoon following the semifinal round.
 
Meanwhile, in the singles, the Bearcats had two players competing in Flight 'A' Singles as freshman Benedek Szombathelyi (Budapest, Hungary/Hunfalvy Janos Bilingual Vocational School) fell in the Round of 16 to Tiffin's Michael Gurtner, 6-3, 3-6, 5-10.
 
The other singles player that competed in Flight 'A' was senior Leonardo Frederico (Tijucas-Santa Cantrina, Brazil/UniCesumar), who is seeded No. 2 and lost in the quarterfinals to seventh-seeded Sylvain Garin-Michaud (6-7 (2-7), 4-6) from Drury. Frederico would earn his spot in the quarterfinals following a win over 10th ranked Marlon Wilken from Drury as Frederico, who was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year last season, picked up a 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 win.
 
Monday will be the final day of competition at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships.
