GREENWOOD, Ind. – The McKendree men's tennis team concluded play here Monday in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Indianapolis and held at Center Grove High School, Center Grove Middle School, and Clark-Pleasant Middle School.
On Monday's final day of the three-day event, the Bearcats had one doubles teams competing in the Flight 'B' semifinals.
The doubles team of sophomore
David Leon Mantilla (Lima, Peru/Colegio Parroquial Santa Rosa de Lima) and sophomore
Jose Antonio Velasco (Lima, Peru), who were seeded No. 4 in the flight, faced UIndy's No. 2 seeded team of Jason Gerweck and Pedro Romano Franca.
UIndy's No. 2 ranked team would prevail in the match, 8-2 to advance to the finals where they faced their Greyhound teammates, Atte Ehrnrooth and Thomas Mathis, who are seeded No. 5 in the flight.
At the event, Mantilla and Velasco went 3-1 in doubles and finished semifinal round of the 'B' Doubles Flight.
On Sunday, McKendree's Flight 'C' Doubles team of senior
Ryan Fung (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior) and sophomore
Tomas Leston (Buenos Aires, Argentina/San Jose Hermanas Nuestra Senora de Rosario) claimed the flight championship following an 8-6 win over William Jewell's duo of Julien Lafranchise and Loris Carret.
McKendree will next be in action on Saturday, Oct. 1 as they conclude its fall season schedule with an exhibition match with Lewis & Clark Community College at 11 a.m. at the tennis courts on the McKendree campus in Lebanon, Ill.
