LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree University women's soccer (3-0-0) opened Leemon Field with a big non-conference victory over Trevecca Nazarene, 1-0. The Bearcats were lifted late in the game with a score by sophomore forward
Lena Higgins, who fired her first score of the 2022 campaign. McKendree faces off against Kentucky Wesleyan on September 6 back at Leemon Field with a 6 PM kick-off.
The first 45 minutes was evenly matched period as both teams put three shots on frame and the half ended 0-0. McKendree earned a pair of corners in the half, playing through the aggressive defense of the Trojans.Â
McKendree's second half showed an even more aggressive attack with 10 shots on goal, doubling the Trojans' shots in the second period. The second half and null score broke open in the closing minute of the game where McKendree gathered a lengthy possession in the Trevecca defensive half. Junior forward
Destiny Johnson gathered the ball outside the 18 after cutting through the TNU defense, dishing the ball to her fellow forward Higgins. Higgins turned and collected, firing a shot into the left side of the net to put the Bearcats up 1-0 at the 89:25 mark of the game.Â
The Bearcats held off the Trojans for the final 35 seconds, winning their third outing of the year. Senior
Abby Tucker held the net for the third straight game, earning her second shutout and clean sheet of 2022. Tucker grabbed three saves in her 90 minutes.Â
Higgins marks the fourth Bearcat to score this season while Johnson marks the second assist dished-out by McKendree in 2022.
