LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree University women's basketball played the first game of its three-game homestand, resulting in a 60-55 setback to University of Missouri-St. Louis. With the defeat, the Bearcats move to 6-8 overall on the season and 3-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
The Bearcats and Tritons battled neck-and-neck through the whole contest, as McKendree trailed for no more than five points in the first and second quarters. By the end of 20 minutes of play, UMSL held a 25-23 lead, though the Bearcats outshot the Tritons 41 percent to 29 percent from the field and 33 percent to 28 percent from beyond the arc.
In the third quarter, the Tritons began with an 8-1 run, though two three-pointers from redshirt freshman guard
Maci Meyer would put the Bearcats back within three of UMSL with three minutes left in the third period. UMSL responded with a 7-4 run to end the third, setting the score at 45-37 heading into the final ten minutes.
McKendree battled in the fourth quarter as junior forward

Madyson Harper netted two threes late in the quarter to put the Bearcats within one at 56-55 with 26 seconds to play. However, McKendree was forced to foul and could not overcome the Tritons' lead from free throws as UMSL took the victory by five, 60-55.
Harper led the Bearcats with a season-high 13 points, including eight fourth-quarter points and shooting a season-high 60 percent from the three-point line (3-for-5) and 55 percent from the field. This marked the second game of the season that Harper has been the leading scorer for McKendree.
Along with Harper, junior forward
Naomi McDaniel was in double-digits with 11 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Harper was second in rebounding, snagging another season-high seven rebounds in the setback.
Fortune tallied eight points for the night while sophomore guard
Clare Breden added five points, six rebounds, and a game-high five assists.
With the win, UMSL improved to an 5-8 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the GLVC.
Leading the way for the Tritons was sophomore guard Jalysa Stokes with 17 points while freshman guard Amaya Blake netted 12 points. Senior center Kiara Stewart recorded a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double in UMSL's victory.
The Bearcats will continue their home slate on Saturday, Jan. 14 as they face Maryville in a 1 p.m. game.
