Men's Soccer Falls to Saints in NCAA Round of 16

Bearcats dominate ball, chances but drop in kicks from the line

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. | Key Stadium - Fourth-seeded McKendree University men's soccer (12-2-7, 8-1-4 GLVC) played to a draw with eight-seeded Maryville on Friday afternoon, falling to the Saints and from the NCAA Tournament in PKs, 8-7. McKendree made its first-ever appearance in the round of 16 after earning its first NCAA Tournament victory on November 19 against Southern Nazarene, 1-0. The Bearcats conclude a historic season with the PK result, recording multiple feats throughout the season, including team and individual records.

The first half proved to be a battle, which was the theme of the third matchup between the Bearcats and Saints as regulation and overtime finished in a draw. Maryville fired six shots in the first half while McKendree tallied five, including a crossbar strike by freshman defender Bailey Winchurch. Freshman goalkeeper Christian Herluf collected three saves in the first half.

McKendree fired another five shots in the second half while holding the Saints to just a single shot in the period. Two of the shots by McKendree hit the crossbar as Winchurch and redshirt junior forward Magnus Buschmeier both fired near-scores. Both the second half and overtime periods ended in a draw, forcing the game into penalty kicks.

The squads were tied after the first five PKs taken, pushing the shootout into sudden death shots. The Saints prevailed with an 8-7 count.
