No.7 Women's Hockey Goes 2-1 in Michigan, Beating Aquinas and MSU

Bearcats return home for Rec Plex Finale of 2022-23 on Friday

MICHIGAN, USA - No.7 McKendree University women's hockey captured two wins during a three-game road trip to Michigan this past weekend, beating Aquinas, 6-1, on Friday and ending with a 3-1 win over Michigan State on Sunday. The Bearcats fell to fifth-ranked Adrian, 3-0, in the Saturday contest. McKendree is back on the ice on Friday, February 17, at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex against No.13 Lindenwood with senior day celebrations prior to puck drop.

Friday, February 10 | Game 1 @ Aquinas
McKendree looked to get back on track after dropping a tight contest to Maryville last time out, 1-0. The Bearcats did not hesitate during their first game of the road weekend with four goals in the first period to take a commanding 4-0 lead. 

The Bearcats were led with a score by sophomore forward Kiley Hasenfratz in teh sixth minute during a power play. Hasenfratz was assisted by senior center Camryn Scully on the play. Sophomore forward Brittney Kambeitz followed in the ninth minute with her own unassisted score to make it a 2-0 contest. During the final two minutes of action in the first period, sophomore defender Aria Groot fired a pair of scores as Scully dished-out another assist on Groot's first and senior forward Juliana Davis assisted on Groot's second. Bearcats led 4-0 after one period. 

In the second, McKendree continued with two more goals as sophomore Larisa Gorgevska-Sharpe score two with one coming in the 11th minute and the second in the 18th minute. Gorgevska-Sharpe's first goal was assisted on by Hasenfratz while sophomore forward Codi Bacon and freshman defender Julia Defosse assisted on the second goal. 

Aquinas took one back in the third, making the game a 6-1 contest in the Bearcats favor.

Junior goaltender Brianna Burke held net for McKendree in game one with 15 saves on the day.

Saturday, February 11 | Game 2 @ Adrian
The Bearcats looked for back-to-back wins as they faced the Bulldogs on Saturday. The game proved to be a defensive battle with zero scoring until the third period. 

Adrian fired three goals in the third and final 10 minutes of the game. The Bulldogs took the win by 3-0 count.

Senior Naomi Leasck held net for full time with 33 saves on the day.


Sunday, February 12 | Game 3 @ Michigan State
McKendree fought to recover from the loss to the No.5 Adrian Bulldogs with the outing against the Spartans. 

Michigan State went up 1-0 to begin the game, scoring in the second minute of play. The Bearcats then tacked on their own score to tie the game in the 11th minute as Davis fired her sixth goal of the season as fellow senior forwards Quinn Atchison and Camryn Scully dished-out the assist. The first period ended 1-1. 

The Bearcats fought to gain traction in the game with a pair of goals during the latter half of period two with Groot and Hobbs collecting scores. Groot fired her third of the weekend in the 16th as sophomore defender Lainy Stienstra and freshman forward Cricket Coleback assisted on the goal. The final score was fired by Hobbs in the 18th minute with Bacon and Gorgevska-Sharpe dishing-off the assist.

McKendree and MSU held with no scoring in the third period as the Bearcats took the game, 3-1. 

Freshman goaltender Rachel Staresinic earned the win with 16 saves and full time in net.
