EVANSVILLE, Ind. - McKendree University women's swimming and diving team finished third out of nine teams with 1,293 points at the Great LVC Championships. The University of Indianapolis won the meet with a total of 1,950 points, followed by Drury University (1,758).
Freshman Ana Cecilia Carvalho dominated the distance events, winning both the 1650 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. She touched the wall with a new school record of 16:46.63 in the 1650, and a B-cut time of 4:52.42 in the 500 freestyle. These two wins were in addition to her 1000 freestyle win on day one of competition.
A huge point grab for the Bearcats was the 200 freestyle, where three Bearcats secured 'A' final swims. Freshmen McKenzie Fazio (1:50.82) and Jocelyn Zgola (1:51.43) finished fourth and sixth, respectively, while junior Alexis Kachkin touched seventh (1:52.56).
In the 200 freestyle relay, the Bearcats finished just .3 seconds behind Indianapolis with a second-place time of 1:31.89. The 'A' team consisted of freshman Gabriela Novais Lima, sophomore Karley Sonnenberg, Kachkin and fifth-year senior Abby Rumpp.
In the last event of the meet, Sonnenberg, Kachkin, Zgola and Rumpp teamed up to place third in the 400 freestyle relay with an NCAA invite time of 3:24.93.
McKendree women's swimming finished the meet with a total of three conference titles, 17 'A' final swims and the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Team Award. Rumpp was selected as the McKendree honoree for the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Individual Award. To close out their season, the Bearcats head to Drury for a Last Chance qualifying meet on Feb. 18 and then the NCAA-II National Championships on March 8-11 in Indianapolis, Ind.
