Men’s Volleyball Falls to Lewis on the Road

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - McKendree University men's volleyball faced Lewis University in a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association game on Saturday evening, falling to the Flyers in three sets. The Bearcats move to 6-10 overall and 1-8 in MIVA play for the 2023 season.  

McKendree and Lewis battled closely in all three of the sets, though the Flyers would ultimately come away with three consecutive wins, 25-23, 25-23, and 25-22. Earlier in the season, the two teams went to five sets, ending in favor of the Flyers.  

Offensively, the Bearcats were led by freshman opposite side hitter Bryce Wetjen who recorded 13 kills for a .391 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Kevin Schuele was also in double digits, tallying 10 across the three sets and hitting .312 percent. Redshirt senior middle blocker Jacob Gall posted a team high 1.000 hitting percentage, firing a season-high eight kills. Junior setter Tyler Poulsen delivered 33 assists for the Bearcats.  

On the defensive side, Gall collected a game-high five blocks while three Bearcats snagged four or more digs including Wetjen, Schuele, and graduate student libero Francisco Comas.  

In the three sets, McKendree outhit Lewis with a .420 hitting percentage for 45 kills while the Flyers totaled 40 kills at .354 percent. The .420 hitting percentage marked the Bearcats' second-highest of the year.  

With the win, Lewis improves to 13-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play as the Flyers were led by redshirt junior outside hitter Christian Prayer with 13 kills.  

The Bearcats are back on the court this coming Thursday, March 23 as they travel to Purdue University Fort Wayne for another MIVA matchup at 7 p.m. ET.
