LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree University softball picked up two wins at Bearcat Field on Tuesday afternoon against Lincoln University of Missouri. The Bearcats improve to 12-5 overall as they prepare to host two home doubleheaders next week. This weekend's games originally scheduled at Maryville University have been canceled due to impending weather.
McKendree posted a dominating 12-0 win in the first game of the doubleheader, jumping to an early lead with an RBI single from senior utility player Olivia Stansbury and a three-run homerun from junior outfielder Jordan Sapp. After a scoreless second inning, the Bearcats' bats got hot in the third inning with Skyler Davis's three-run homerun and a grand slam by Stansbury, pushing her RBI total to five for the contest.
The Bearcats solidified the 12-0 win with no hits in the top of the fifth. Junior Ellie Quaethem pitched all five innings, recording 13 strikeouts against 16 batters and allowing just one hit for the Blue Tigers.
In game two, McKendree built an early 3-0 lead over the Blue Tigers in the first inning with a two-run homerun by freshman infielder Lauren Harris. Stansbury made it back-to-back homeruns with a solo shot over the right field fence. In the bottom of the fourth, freshman catcher Mollie Vetter hit a triple to bring in freshman infielder Kinsey Vergason while a sacrifice fly from Heaven Lawrence brought Vetter around to put the Bearcats up 5-0.
The Blue Tigers put their first runs of the day on the board in the top of the sixth inning but would be stopped short of tying the game at 5-4. McKendree tallied three more runs in the bottom of the sixth with three RBI from junior utility player Reagan Cheely.
Sophomore Sydney Bires began the game in the circle for McKendree, allowing four runs and eight hits while striking out three batters. Junior Sophia Koesterer finished out the game with two strikeouts against five batters in the last inning.
Coming up, McKendree will host two home doubleheaders with a 2 p.m. start against Harris-Stowe on Wednesday, March 15 and a 12 p.m. start against Lewis on Saturday, March 18 at Bearcat Field.
