SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - McKendree University men's tennis posted two Great Lakes Valley Conference wins this past weekend as they competed on the road at Lewis University and the University of Illinois-Springfield. With the victories, the Bearcats improved to 12-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play.  

McKendree played both matches to clinch, defeating Lewis 4-1 and Illinois-Springfield 4-0.  

In doubles matches, McKendree's No.1 pair of senior Leonardo Schmitz Frederico and freshman Benedek Szombathelyi went 2-0, winning 6-2 over Lewis and 6-3 over Illinois-Springfield. At the No.2 doubles spot, freshmen Tomas Leston and Jose Antonio Velasco split their matches with a 6-4 win over Lewis while Illinois-Springfield slipped away with a 7-6 win. Seniors Ryan Fung and Lorenzo del Biondo swept the No.3 doubles matches, defeating Lewis 7-5 and Illinois-Springfield 6-1.  

Against Lewis, the Bearcats won singles 3-1 to seal the victory with victories from Schmitz Frederico (6-2, 6-1), Leston (6-2, 6-2), and Velasco (6-2, 6-3) while the No.5 and 6 matches were won by retirement.  

After capturing the doubles wins at Illinois-Springfield, the Bearcats sealed the match with three straight wins in the No.1-3 matches. Schmitz Frederico won 6-3, 6-3 while Szombathelyi posted scores of 7-6, 5-3 and Leston recorded a 6-3, 6-0 victory.  

Coming up, the Bearcats will host the No.5-ranked University of Indianapolis on Saturday, April 15 at 11 a.m. The match will be played on the campus of Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville, Ill.
