Men’s Volleyball Concludes MIVA Tournament Play at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – McKendree University men's volleyball ended its Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association tournament run with a 3-1 loss to No.3-seeded Ohio State University on Wednesday evening.  

The contest marked the Bearcats' fourth appearance in the MIVA semifinals as the Buckeyes advanced to their third title game. McKendree ended its season with a 7-16 overall record, though posted a historic run in the MIVA tournament becoming the first No.7-seeded team to win a tournament game.  

McKendree hung close with Ohio State in the first match, falling 25-20, but prevailed in the second set with a 25-21 victory. In the second set, the Bearcats out-hit the Buckeyes .296-.286 with six kills from freshman opposite side hitter Bryce Wetjen.  

Ohio State took the third set with a 25-9 performance as the Bearcats struggled to gain momentum in the set. McKendree put up a fight in the fourth set, but the Buckeyes would ultimately win the fourth set 25-15.  

Offensively, the Bearcats were led by redshirt junior outside hitter Kyle Wilson who tallied 11 kills and Wetjen who recorded 10 kills. Redshirt junior Tyler Poulsen delivered 30 assists for the game.  

On the defensive side, freshman middle blocker Rolen Lively collected five blocks while graduate student Francisco Comas snagged five digs. Comas ends his career second at McKendree in career digs with a total of 730.  

The MIVA championship between No.1 Ball State University and No.3 Ohio State is set for April 22 as the Cardinals will host the Buckeyes in Muncie, Ind.
