HOW IT HAPPENED

Still searching for their first official win of the season, McKendree would take on perceptible in-state rival Augustana on the road. The Vikings opened this game after a well-played prior weekend with junior Mark Addison (Eads, Tenn.) connecting on the first goal only 22 seconds into play. It was only 51 seconds later that his teammate, sophomore Rhys Lomax (Johannesburg, South Africa), would put one in as well. Co-leading scorer, sophomore Yannick Robertson (Trinidad and Tobago), finally put the Bearcats on the board at the 4:48 mark and was able to tie up a little over three and a half minutes later. However, Augustana's leading scorer in junior Stevan Rasic (Park Ridge, Ill.) would sneak one inside in the final second of the first quarter, giving his team a 3-2 lead.

It was a split of control in the second period of play, as McKendree converted on the first three scoring possessions in the quarter, starting with the other co-leading scorer, Joshua Gibson (Nassau, Bahamas) who nailed it 36 seconds in to tie the game back up. The Bearcats would capture their first lead after a goal coming from an exclusion drawn by sophomore Isaac Demski (Eastvale, Calif.), and would succeed on another scoring possession from Robertson again a little over a minute later. The Vikings would not let down in their home waters as Lomax would start to close the deficit for his team with 4:18 to play in the period. Fellow teammates Addison and junior Oskar Bannister (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) would give Augustana a couple more goals with the latter converting on a penalty-goal and the former getting it inside with 57 seconds remaining to end the first half leading 6-5.

Momentum was back on McKendree's side in the third quarter as junior James Ramey (St. Louis, Mo.) gave his road-warriors a goal, and would soon snag the lead once more as Robertson would get his fourth goal of the game at the 3:27 mark. The Vikings would halt the opposing enthusiasm again when sophomore Alden Brinkmeier (Keller, Texas) would come in and sling one in to tie the game and end the third period 7-7.

The fourth and final quarter of play was a slow start until Robertson would capitalize on an astounding day, putting a win in his team's crosshairs. Hopes were crushed in the final two minutes of regulation where Bannister would help Augustana tie up the game with a huge successful shot which was followed by a game-clutching goal from Vikings senior Colin McDowell (Hudsonville, Mich.) with 1:18 remaining in regulation and held serve to come out with the 9-8 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Robertson's five goals is a season-high for the McKendree sophomore as he accomplished that feat along with three steals and a drawn exclusion in this matchup. Demski had a well-rounded performance as well, dishing out four assists along with his goal to go with four steals and two exclusions drawn.

  • Ramey and Gibson both gave the Bearcats a goal and an assist each, with the former grabbing two steals along the way.

  • Augustana was led by Addison, Bannister, and Lomax, who all had two goals each in the win. Bannister and junior Tyler Leslie (Aurora, Ill.) made their defense presence felt, each snagging three steals.

  • Fifth-year goalkeeper Jimmy Cronin (Naperville, Ill.) was in the whole game for McKendree, tallying up 14 saves in the afternoon and a steal.

  • For the Vikings, junior Declan Hutton (Bedfordview, South Africa) was in the net for his team, also saving the ball 14 times and collecting a whopping six steals. Hutton was credited with an assist as well.
