LEBANON, Ill. | Leemon Field - No.12 and second-seeded
McKendree University men's soccer (14-0-7, 8-0-6 GLVC) is set to move on to the NCAA Division II quarterfinal round for the first time in program history following its 2-0 shutout of sixth-seeded Findlay on Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats put up their 14th shutout on the year in the victory while goals by freshman midfielder
Henri Poll and senior midfielder
Philipp Schmidt pushed the squad to the victory over the Oilers. The win sends McKendree nearly 600 miles north for the Super Region final as they face the top-seeded Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, December 7 at 12:00PM CT.
The Bearcats and Oilers have never met on the pitch until Sunday afternoon with McKendree taking the first match up behind a pair of first-half scores to push deeper into the national tournament. McKendree broke through first in the 16th minute on a corner kick, which was crossed into the box by senior defender
Matteo Schubert. Schubert's corner was headed in past the keeper's grasp by the freshman Poll , giving the Bearcats their 1-0 advantage.
Later in the first half, McKendree then put up another score with the senior Schmidt blasting a shot from the upper part of the box, which was deflected and spun into the back of the net. McKendree held its 2-0 lead over Findlay at the intermission stretch.
McKendree's defense, the staple of success for the Bearcats, held true once again in the latter half for the victory as sophomore goalkeeper
Christian Herluf gained his 14th shutout of the season and his 28th career clean sheet outing. He now ties the program's single-season mark for shutouts, which he set in 2023 at 14 while continuing to push the program's career mark upwards. Herluf also collected 7 saves in the win, facing 22 total shots in the contest.
