O'FALLON, Ill. - McKendree University women's water polo hosted a three-team round robin on Saturday and came out on top as the 2-0 team. The Bearcats are now 2-4 on the season as they prepare for the Macalester Invitational in St. Paul, Minnesota.
In game one against Augustana, the Bearcats and Vikings proved to be evenly matched through the first half with a score of 5-4 at the break. The third quarter was the deciding factor for McKendree when the Bearcats put up four goals to the Vikings' one. The Bearcats' lead was enough to hold off Augustana for the 11-8 victory. Leading the Bearcats in scoring was senior attacker Jasmine Guzman with four goals while freshman attacker Shanelle Márquez added three. Sophomore attacker Joey Rebelo and freshman attacker Haley Munoz accounted for two goals each. Junior goalkeeper Sydney Kane held the net for the entire game, grabbing eight saves.
McKendree displayed a dominant performance against Carthage College in game two, sealing the victory 15-4. Rebelo tallied five goals to lead McKendree in addition to three each from Márquez and sophomore center Megan Morris. Sophomore attacker Jazmin Sandoval and fifth-year senior Delaney Hall snagged three steals apiece. Kane accounted for 14 saves while fifth-year senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Kasper made a save in the fourth quarter.
Coming up, the Bearcats are at the Macalester Invitational next weekend with two games on Saturday, Feb. 17 and and two more on Sunday, Feb. 18.
