INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - McKendree University women's tennis opened its spring season in Indianapolis this past weekend, facing No.18 Grand Valley State University and Tiffin University. The Bearcats won one singles match and one doubles match for the weekend.
Against Grand Valley State, junior Sofija Djunisijevic captured the lone McKendree win on the day, defeating Anna Soteras 6-2, 6-4. Competing in the No.1 match was senior Camilla Fonseca who fell to Vasileia Griva 2-6, 2-6 and fifth-year senior Viola Cipriani in the No.2 match fell to Rachel Sam 2-6, 7-6, 4-6. In the No.3 match, senior Rhyan Cook was topped by Neus Ramos 4-6, and 4-6 while the No.5 match was won by Estefania Hernandez against Maria Vitoria Salomao 6-1, 5-7, 7-10. Rounding out singles matches was sophomore Iva Poleksic who faced Vale Mozas; Mozas took the victory 2-6, 3-6.
In doubles play, the duo of Cipriani and Fonseca played a close match but was defeated 5-7. Djunisijevic and Poleksic fell by a score of 2-6 while junior Pien Ruempol and Cook lost a close 4-6 match.
Against Tiffin, the game was highlighted by a doubles win by Ruempol and Cook who took the No.3 doubles match 7-5. No.1 doubles pair Fonseca and Cipriani fell in doubles 2-6 while the No.2 doubles pair of Salomao and Poleksic were bested by Tiffin 0-6.
In singles play, Fonseca fell in the No.1 match 7-5, 4-6, 4-6 to Tiffin's Maeva Maxch while the No.2 match was won by Tiffin's Anaelle Lepiny 2-6, 4-6 over Cipriani. Cook fell in the No.3 match to Emily Barrett 7-5, 3-6, 4-6. Matches four and five were won by Tiffin as Djunisijevic was topped by Jemimah Choi 0-6, 1-6.
Up next, the Bearcats play at home against Michigan Tech University on Friday, Feb. 16 at the St. Clair Tennis Club.
