LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree University women's basketball will face two Great Lakes Valley Conference foes each for the second time this season. The Bearcats host Quincy University on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m. and the University of Illinois Springfield on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 1 p.m.
McKendree has gained momentum coming off of two wins last week including an overtime win over Upper Iowa. The Bearcats are first in the conference with a 16-5 overall record and a 12-3 record against GLVC opponents. Junior guard Clare Breden remains second in scoring at 17.9 points per game while senior forward Naomi McDaniel is first in blocked shots (1.6 per game), fourth in field goal percentage (55.0 percent), and fifth in rebounding (8.2 per game). Notably, the Bearcats are second overall in team field goal percentage, netting 44.9 percent of tries from the field.
McKendree faced Quincy in early December, taking down the Hawks 65-61. The Hawks are eighth in the conference with a 9-12 overall record and an 8-7 GLVC record. As a team, the Hawks lead the conference in blocked shots and are second in rebounding. Cymirah Williams tops the GLVC in rebounding and averages 9.7 rebounds per game while Acheampomaa Danso trails just behind McDaniel at second in blocked shots.
The first match-up this season between the Bearcats and the Prairie Stars took place on Dec. 7 as the high-scoring game resulted in a McKendree victory, 90-84. Illinois Springfield tops the GLVC charts in steals, averaging 11.24 steals per game and they are second in scoring with an average of 76.4 points per game. Jessenia Lawson ranks just behind Breden at 17.5 points per game while also leading the GLVC in steals, snagging 2.6 per game.
