No.20 Men’s Volleyball Takes Down No.14 Lewis in Five Sets

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - No.20-ranked McKendree University men's volleyball upset the No.14-ranked Lewis University on Thursday night with a 3-2 victory. The Bearcats improved to 13-6 overall and 7-3 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.  

The two familiar foes traded sets throughout the match with Lewis taking the first set 25-21, McKendree taking the second set 25-18, Lewis capturing set three 25-23, and McKendree securing set four 25-22. Set five came down to the wire as the Bearcats tied up the score at nine, saw two kills from junior middle blocker D'Aaron McCraney, an ace from redshirt senior setter Tyler Poulsen, a kill each from freshman right side hitter Nathan Flayter and junior outside hitter Kevin Schuele, and a service error from Lewis to seal the set 15-11.  

Four Bearcats recorded double-digit kills including a career-high 20 kills by Schuele, a career-high 11 kills from Flayter, 11 kills for redshirt sophomore outside hitter Sam Hoskin, and 10 kills for McCraney. Flayter posted a double-double, leading McKendree with 14 digs while junior libero Yadiel Diaz added 10 and Hoskin chipped in nine.  

McKendree tied its season-high of eight aces, led by Poulsen who also tallied 46 assists and helped the Bearcats to a .344 hitting percentage. Additionally, the team tied its season-high of total kills at 61, the last time against Queens on Feb. 15.  

Coming up, the Bearcats continue their road trip to Loyola Chicago for a 5 pm match on Saturday, March 16.
