Softball Walks-Off Behind Vetter's 10th Inning Single; Eliminates Maryville from #GLVCsb Championship

Bearcats led by Stansbury's 4/5 day while Vetter propels McKendree to the win

EAST PEORIA, Ill. | EastSide Centre - Fourth-seeded McKendree University softball (34-21, 16-10 GLVC) captured its first postseason victory since 2021 on Friday afternoon, beating Maryville, 4-3, in 10 innings to survive in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament. The Bearcats were propelled to victory by a walk-off single from sophomore catcher Mollie Vetter while being led at the plate by graduate infielder Olivia Stansbury, who went four of five on the day. McKendree survives and advances in the conference championship tournament, facing fifth-seeded Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday morning at 9AM on Field 2.

McKendree went down by two runs in the top of the first inning but rallied over the next three innings, going up 3-2 by the end of the third inning. The first run was driven home by Stansbury, who doubled to bring sophomore infielder Lauren Harris around for the score. In the second, junior utility Heaven Lawrence put a ball in play, reaching on a fielder's choice while scoring junior infielder Sarah Roth. The third inning saw senior outfielder Taylor Witges singled to left field to bring around the then-leading run in Stansbury. The Bearcats led 3-2 following the third.

Scoring went null until the sixth with Maryville tying the game at three runs a piece, which forced the game into extra innings. McKendree and Maryville battled back and forth over the seventh, eighth, and ninth which featured no scoring but ample base runners. The 10th inning had three total base runners prior to Vetter, with a pair of walks keeping two Bearcats on the bases. Vetter then knocked a flaring single to right to lock up the win as Witges rounded and slid into home for the victory.

Senior pitcher Ellie Quaethem tossed the full contest with seven punch outs, earning her 21st victory of the 2024 campaign.
