Women's Hockey Sweeps Lions at Centene; Goes 4-1 in September

MARYLAND, HEIGHTS, Mo. | Centene Community Ice Center - McKendree University women's hockey (4-1-0, 3-1-0 WMCH) captured two road ice victories over the weekend against another local foe in Lindenwood, beating the Lions 2-1 and 3-2 across the St. Louis metro at Centene. The Bearcats closed up the month of September with three-straight wins, defeating Niagara on September 26 before sweeping the Lions. McKendree also opened up the campaign with a home victory over crosstown rival Maryville at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex on September 20. McKendree hits the road to Michigan for its next trio of contests with battles at Adrian, Grand Valley State, and Michigan on October 4, 5, and 6. 

Game 1 @ Lindenwood | September 28
The Bearcats and Lions battled through the first period with a dead knot at 0-0 being the result through 20 minutes of action. McKendree dominated the period, firing 14 shots on goal compared to the five from Lindenwood. 

In the second period, McKendree broke through in the fifth minute during a power play as senior forward Kiley Hasenfratz fired her fourth goal of the season with sophomore forward Abigail Jeffers and senior defense Aria Groot adding the assists. The Bearcats held the advantage for three minutes before the Lions struck back during a penalty kill opportunity for McKendree, tying the game at 1-1. The second period ended locked up at one goal a piece for the squads. 

McKendree battled through during another power play in the 12th minute of the third period as junior forward Kerstyn Barron score her first goal of the season behind a dish-out by Hasenfratz. McKendree held off the Lions to bring home the victory, 2-1, with freshman goaltender Makenna Collins earning her first collegiate win behind 17 saves. 

In the game, Hasenfratz became the newest Bearcat to be a member of the 50-point club as she tallied two points to reach the feat.

Game 2 @ Lindenwood | September 29
McKendree was poised to cap-off the month with a third-straight win on Sunday and captured just that behind its 3-2 result, pushing their record to 4-1 to open the 2024-25 campaign. 

The Bearcats went up 1-0 in the opening period in the 17th minute as senior forward Isobelle Hobbs fired her second goal of the season with junior defense Lilia Brown and sophomore defense Charlotte Cloutier getting assists. McKendree led 1-0 after the first.

Lindenwood tied the game at 1-1 in the eighth minute of the second period but the Bearcats came back at the 12-minute mark as freshman forward Kendra Shumaker collected her first collegiate score during a power play off dish outs by junior forward Janaya Laqua and senior forward Larisa Gorgevska-Sharpe. McKendree led 2-1 after the second. 

In the third McKendree tallied an insurance score just three minutes in as junior forward Jayna Barnden found the back of the net with Jeffers and Barrons tallying assists. The Lions added one more score but the Bearcats earned the win to close out the month. 

Junior goaltender Rachel Staresinic collected the victory in net with 22 saves on the day.
