SCOUTING THE LAST OUTING

McKendree is coming off an exhibition matchup against NCAA Division I member Southern Illinois University last Monday, November 3rd in Carbondale.

There, the Bearcats could not contain the Salukis in their official season opener at the Banterra Center, where a series of double-digit runs expanded the two sides farther from each other. McKendree kept pushing through the whole game in cutting the deficit, but were immediately responded to by SIU each time as the home Salukis capped off the 83-42 win.

HISTORY SHOWCASE

The Bearcats faced off against Tiffin and Malone University to start the season last year, when the GLVC/G-MAC Crossover was held at Romeoville, Illinois on the campus of conference-foe Lewis University. They won both games by an average score of 19.0 points, which helped ignite a 3-0 start to their regular season.

Dating back to McKendree's debut in the NCAA Division II era (2012-13 season), they are 1-2 against the Dragons, with the lone win coming last year at the crossover at 69-45. Both other outings were also held on neutral grounds.

Against the Pioneers, the Bearcats have faced the team from Canton, Ohio only once in the Division II era, which also came last season as part of the annual event. In that lone game, McKendree came victorious against Malone, 84-70.

KNOW THE FOE

Tiffin was picked to finish this season 12th in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). They went 7-21 last season as they concluded with three straight losses to miss their conference postseason tournament. That is coming off of two winning seasons with the Dragons posting a .500 or better record.

Malone was slotted at 10th place in this year's G-MAC preseason poll despite winning the conference tournament last year. They ended the regular season slate with an even 16-16 overall record with a 9-11 mark in conference play to earn them the seven-seed in the G-MAC Basketball Championships. In the tournament, they surpassed the two-seed Kentucky Wesleyan College and three-seed Hillsdale College before taking down the four-seed in Thomas More University, who beat the Bearcats last season. By claiming the G-MAC championship, the Pioneers earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they would go out in the first round game against GLVC-foe Missouri S&T, 77-85.

I DON'T MEAN TO BE A BURTON

A bright spot in McKendree's last outing at Southern Illinois was senior guard Caleb Burton (O'Fallon, Ill.), who led the team in scoring with eight points, which was two more than he had all of last season (6). In 18 minutes of play, Burton also collected a rebound, two assists, and a steal while hitting a 50.0% clip (1-2) from beyond the arc.

SNIPERS IN THE BUSHES

Despite shooting 22.7% (5-22) from deep as team last Monday on foreign floors,  four Bearcats shot 50.0% or better from long range that night. One of them being Burton as he went 1-for-2 from distance with the same output as redshirt junior Justin King (Mascoutah, Ill.). Redshirt sophomore Jakob Fredricksen (Elizabethtown, Ky.) knocked in two on four attempts while first-year forward Joshua Schönbäck (Kierling, Austria) dropped in his only attempt from the far corner.

THE NUMBERS TO KNOW

McKendree returns nine players to the fold on this year's roster. From last year's numbers, they averaged a combined 31.3 points per game of the team's 71.3 average output, which is approximately 42.7% of returning production on the scoring side of the ball. In the exhibition match, the returners accounted for 30 of the team's 42 total points, which equates to 71.4% while the newcomers put up the remaining 12 points (28.6%).
