Women’s Water Polo Wins Big Against the Carthage Firebirds

Team Ties Most Steals this Season with 13

KENOSHA, Wis. - The women's water polo team took care of business on a light weekend against Carthage College at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Score: McKendree University 11, Carthage College 3

Record: Bearcats 12-3, 0-0 WWPA | Firebirds 2-12, 0-1 CWPA

HOW IT HAPPENED

It was all Bearcats in the first quarter of play, as McKendree dropped in three goals, each from junior attacker Jazmine Sandoval (Westminster, Calif.), junior attacker Joey Rebelo (Montreal, Québec), and sophomore center Bella Morquecho (Chicago, Ill.).

Carthage finally got themselves on the board with an early second-period goal from freshman utility Kira Jacobson. Yet, McKendree would be right there to answer as they closed out the second quarter with another trio of goals by Rebelo for her second, along with sophomore attacker Shanelle Márquez (Madrid, Spain) and junior center defender Allie Diller (Grand Ledge, Mich.).

Coming out of halftime, the Firebirds would begin with two more goals for their team, still being down by three at 3-6.

The Bearcats barred any anticipated comebacks by Carthage as they reeled off five straight goals from the end of the third period till the end of regulation as all five scores each came from various players.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Rebelo and Márquez each finished with a pair of goals as the former rounded out with an assist, two drawn exclusions, and a steal while the latter came away with one dawn exclusion and one steal.

  • Junior attacker Dylan Murphy (Carlsbad, Calif.) tabbed a goal, an assist, two drawn exclusions, and a team-high three steals.

  • Fifth-year attacker Jasmin Guzman (Cicero, Ill.) had one goal, two assists, and a pair of drawn exclusions and steals.

  • Senior goalkeeper Sydney Kane (Kankakee, Ill.) snatched 11 saves and one steal in the win.

  • McKendree outshot the Firebirds 25-7.

  • The Bearcats were +4 in exclusions drawn.

  • McKendree had a 13-0 advantage in steals. Those steals are the team's most since grabbing 13 against Carthage earlier this season on January 26th.
