Bearcats bombard Miners, Blue Tigers with 34 runs over four-game weekend

LEBANON, Ill. | Bearcat Field - No.22 McKendree University softball (23-12, 9-3 GLVC) tallied another 3-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference weekend with a sweep on Saturday over Lincoln, 11-1 and 5-0, after splitting with Missouri S&T on Friday afternoon. The No.22 squad improved to 9-3 in league play behind the wins while also moving to 9-3 at home this season.  The Bearcats put up 34 total runs on the weekend, including 28 over the three victories while also collecting two run-rule wins with one over each adversary. McKendree hits the road for its next pair of GLVC doubleheaders with the Bearcats heading out to face cross-metro foes in Maryville and UMSL on March 29 and 30.

Game 1 vs. S&T | W, 12-4 (6inn)
The Bearcats captured fourth-straight win with the run-rule result in the first game of the weekend, grabbing the lead in the first inning and not looking back. The initial run came off a home run by junior and starting pitcher Ellie Vetter, who gave herself run support to start off the contest. McKendree added further run support in the third inning with a seven-run half, including a two-run shot by Vetter, who made the game 3-0. The remainder of the third saw two RBI single hits with senior infielder Sarah Roth adding two before freshman catcher Morgan Spodarek dropped in a single to score Roth. Freshman infielder Paisley Twait then doubled to score both Bartz and Spodarek.

S&T managed a pair of runs in the fourth but it was followed up with a double by junior infielder Ali Grenzebach, which scored both Roth and junior shortstop Lauren Harris. The Miners score two more but the Bearcats answered with two more to finish the game early as Harris doubled and Spodarek singled to score one run each.

Vetter earned the win with four punch outs while she added two homers whole eight teammates recorded at least one hit and three bashed extra base hits.

Game 2 vs. S&T | L, 9-6
McKendree stumbled in the second game of the weekend against S&T, going down 6-0 before putting up three runs in the fourth inning. The Bearcat runs came from a double by Spodarek, a single by Roth, and a force play created by senior outfielder Heaven Lawrence. The Bearcats sat in a three-run deficit following the fourth, 6-3.

The seventh inning saw a plethora of scoring to close out the game as S&T amassed three more, pushing the deficit up to six runs. McKendree did not flinch, fighting back with three more runs before succumbing to S&T with a 9-6 final score.

Game 1 vs. LU | W, 11-1 (5inn)
The 22nd-ranked Bearcats jumped back into action on Saturday and found a stride at the plate once again. After a flurry of at-bats for Lincoln, which saw one run for the visitor, McKendree got to the plate, powering through five runs in the bottom of the first. The first run came via double from junior pitcher Sami Huck, who pushed Vetter through to home, which tied the game. The Bearcats then pushed four through with a grand slam by Roth, scoring Grenzebach, Spodarek, and Huck in one swing of the bat.

McKendree then put up two runs in each of the next three innings with an RBI-single by Spodarek and an RBI-single by Grenzebach in the second, then a two-run double by Harris, and then a two-run single by Vetter in the fourth.
