Men's Soccer Gets Weekend Sweep with 4-1 Win over Jewell

Bearcats recover from three-game skid with clean sweep weekend

LEBANON, Ill. | Leemon Field - With a strong 4-1 victory over William Jewell on Sunday, McKendree University men's soccer (2-3-1, 2-1-0 GLVC) collected a second-consecutive win to get back on track this fall, snapping a three-game skid as it headed into this two-game weekend. The Bearcats uses two goals per half to propel their efforts in the victory, including two firsts with the program as freshman defender Alonso Romero and sophomore forward Morgan Dance each fired a goal. McKendree hits the road for its next two contests, heading to Bolivar and Southwest Baptist on September 26 before taking on Drury in Springfield on September 28.

McKendree grounded the Cardinals early with the two first half goals, opening the game up in the 18th minute behind a foul in the box drawn by sophomore defender Philipp Muehlhans. The foul on Muehlhans drew a penalty kick with sophomore midfielder Henri Poll tabbed to take the attempt. Poll connected and fired the shot into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage in favor of the Bearcats. McKendree continues applying ample pressure on the attack, breaking through again in the 42nd minute behind junior forward Chris Moore connecting on a ball for his first goal of the campaign. The Bearcats went into the intermission period with a 2-0 lead on William Jewell.

The second half saw WJC find a goal early on, cutting the Bearcat lead to just one score but McKendree pushed on. In the 57th minute, the Bearcats struck once again with Romero striking a free kick ball beyond the reach of the keeper for his first goal in a McKendree kit and a 3-1 lead. The attack did not slow down for McKendree through the latter end of the contest with multiple chances coming near the WJC third. The fourth and final goal of the game found the back of the net for McKendree in the 85th, as a craft build-up saw junior forward Lenny Dupoyet dish out a ball to Dance, who blasted his first goal in a Bearcats kit.
