Liberty, MO - The McKendree University Women's Basketball team wrapped up a two-game stay in Missouri on Saturday afternoon by taking on the William Jewell Cardinals in GLVC action. The Bearcats (8-5, 5-2 GLVC) were fresh off an exciting win at Truman State, while the Cardinals (0-13, 0-7 GLVC) were still in search of the win column for the first time. While the offense was there from the get-go, William Jewell remained close in the opening frame. However, a defensive clamp-down in the second quarter surged McKendree ahead, and the lead would balloon from there. The Bearcats would eventually win by 46 points (94-48), tying the largest margin of victory they've had as a member of the GLVC, with the only other 46-point GLVC win being this season against Rockhurst back on December 1st.
Similar to the trajectory of Thursday's game, McKendree was able to get its first edge of the game thanks to crashing the offensive boards and getting extra possessions.
Baylie Parks grabbed an offensive rebound and converted the putback to give the Bearcats their first lead, with
Kyra Taylor and
Chloe White both adding second-chance buckets in the quarter. McKendree broke the 20-point threshold in the first 10 minutes and would lead 22-14 while holding the Cardinals to a 30% shooting effort.
The Bearcats really began to stretch the lead in the second quarter. They were able to not just crank up their defensive efforts, but also the offense, especially in transition. Taylor scored off a turnover early in the quarter, and
Tessa Crawford followed with a fast break layup to push the margin to double figures.
Emma Slings added another moments later, forcing William Jewell to burn a timeout as McKendree was up 11 at the time (27-16). The Bearcats held the Cardinals to just nine points in the quarter and went into the halftime break up 36-23 after forcing turnovers on consecutive possessions in the waning moments of the half.
If the second quarter wasn't game-defining enough, McKendree locked in even more so in the third quarter. Slings knocked down a second-chance three at the 8:58 mark to extend the lead to 18, and the Bearcats continued to attack the glass behind Parks, who scored twice after offensive rebounds during the quarter. Taylor added points at the free throw line, and McKendree's defense once again limited William Jewell to nine points in the quarter. By quarter's end, the Bearcats had pushed the margin to 59-32.
As impressive as the McKendree effort had been thus far, it would be the fourth quarter that would be their highest-scoring - 35 points, in fact.
Morgan Feil opened the quarter with a tip-in layup and followed with a fast break layup as the lead surpassed 30.
Maliah Sparks added a pull-up jumper and a transition layup, and
Kylie Moeller scored on three straight possessions late in the quarter, converting two fast-break layups and a finish in traffic. The Bearcats achieved a new largest lead in the frame as well - the final score - winning Saturday's game by 46 points.
