Bearcat Football's Second-Half Rally Falls Short at Missouri S&T, 28-21

Richardson returns kickoff 93 yards for touchdown as Bearcats outscore Miners 14-7 in second half

Rolla, MO - The McKendree University football team (2-5, 2-3 GLVC) battled back from a 21-point deficit Saturday afternoon, but its second-half comeback ultimately fell short in a 28-21 loss to Missouri S&T (1-6, 1-4 GLVC) at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

After falling behind 21-0 in the first half and 28-7 early in the third quarter, the Bearcats responded with 14 unanswered points and held the Miners scoreless over the final 19 minutes of regulation. McKendree outgained Missouri S&T 219-85 in total offense during the second half, but was unable to complete the comeback despite advancing to the Miners' five-yard line on the game's final possession.

McKendree finished with 319 yards of total offense, including 221 through the air, while holding Missouri S&T to 284 total yards. The Bearcats also collected 19 first downs to the Miners' 17 and converted seven of their 15 third-down opportunities.

Quarterback Kendrick Lyons completed 20 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown, while Jerry Richardson accounted for a team-high 193 all-purpose yards, highlighted by a 93-yard kickoff return touchdown. Izaias Primus led the Bearcats' rushing attack with 64 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

Michale Sutton paced McKendree's receiving corps with five receptions for 86 yards, while Daryle Jones Jr. added five catches for 71 yards. Kendric Johnson hauled in four receptions for 30 yards, and Kamren Schumacher recorded two catches for 15 yards and a touchdown.

Missouri S&T opened the scoring on its first possession, marching 56 yards in 10 plays before Eli Scott connected with Sam Ryan for a 22-yard touchdown pass. The Miners extended their advantage to 14-0 later in the opening quarter on a 27-yard touchdown reception by Tyler Gioia.

McKendree responded to the opening score with an 11-play, 57-yard possession, highlighted by a 22-yard rush from Primus, but the drive ended on downs at the Missouri S&T 36-yard line.

The Miners pushed their lead to 21-0 with 9:48 remaining in the second quarter on a two-yard touchdown run by AJ Harris.

However, the Bearcats answered immediately.

On the ensuing kickoff, Richardson fielded the ball at the McKendree seven-yard line and raced 93 yards for a touchdown, putting the Bearcats on the scoreboard. Truman Carnine converted the extra point to trim the deficit to 21-7 with 9:36 remaining before halftime.

The McKendree defense later produced a takeaway when Karter Woodard recovered a Missouri S&T fumble at the Bearcats' 36-yard line. The offense advanced into Miners territory before a fumble ended the possession.

Missouri S&T carried its 21-7 advantage into the halftime break.

The Miners extended their lead to 28-7 with 10:35 remaining in the third quarter when Gioia broke free for a 37-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-one.

McKendree began its comeback on the following possession, putting together an 11-play, 65-yard touchdown drive that consumed 5:48 of game time. Lyons connected with Sutton for gains of 20 and 23 yards during the series, setting up Primus' two-yard touchdown run with 5:39 remaining in the third quarter.

After forcing a Missouri S&T punt, the Bearcats began their next possession at their own 11-yard line and orchestrated a 13-play, 89-yard scoring drive.

The Bearcat defense continued to deliver in the final quarter.

Missouri S&T attempted to convert a fourth-and-one at its own 34-yard line, but Woodard and Kaleb Randolph combined to stop Evan Wells for no gain, giving McKendree possession in Miners territory with 12:18 remaining.

The Bearcats advanced to the Missouri S&T 18-yard line before an interception ended the scoring opportunity.

McKendree's defense forced another punt on the ensuing possession, giving the offense another opportunity with 7:25 remaining. The Bearcats moved from their own 15-yard line to near midfield before the drive stalled.

Jesser Zepeda then delivered a 52-yard punt that pinned Missouri S&T at its own five-yard line with 1:57 remaining.

The Bearcat defense held the Miners to just six yards on three plays, forcing a punt and giving the offense one final opportunity at the Missouri S&T 47-yard line with 55 seconds remaining.

Despite facing fourth-and-19, Lyons connected with Jones Jr. for a 32-yard completion to keep the possession alive. Following a spike to stop the clock, Lyons found Sutton for another 19-yard gain, advancing the ball to the Missouri S&T five-yard line as time expired.

McKendree held the Miners to just 19 total yards and zero first downs in the fourth quarter, while allowing only 85 yards of total offense across the entire second half.

McKendree will look to rebound next Saturday, October 24, when the Bearcats travel to Jefferson City, Missouri, for a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup against Lincoln University. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
