OWENSBORO, Ky. – The McKendree University men's golf team saved its finest performance for the final day, turning a tightly contested tournament into a runaway victory at The Pearl Club. Fueled by a sensational nine-under-par 63 from Matthew Delanty and four under-par individual rounds, the Bearcats combined to shoot 19-under-par in the final round, claiming the team championship by an impressive 20 strokes.
McKendree finished the 54-hole event at 10-under-par 854 (294-291-269), comfortably ahead of runner-up Kentucky Wesleyan, which closed at 10-over-par. Young Harris secured third place at 17-over, followed by Missouri S&T (+29) and Brescia (+36) to round out the top five.
The Bearcats entered the final round at nine-over-par following opening rounds of 294 (+6) and 291 (+3), but quickly erased that deficit with an offensive onslaught across the par-72, 6,888-yard layout. Their closing 269 (-19) proved more than enough to separate themselves from the rest of the 12-team field.
Delanty Delivers a Round to Remember
Few performances could have better illustrated McKendree's final-day surge than the one delivered by Delanty.
After opening the tournament with an 82 (+10), the Bearcat golfer steadied himself with a second-round 73 (+1) before putting together an extraordinary closing performance.
Delanty caught fire early, carding a five-under-par 31 on the front nine before continuing his torrid pace with a four-under 32 on the back. His nine-under-par 63 was the lowest individual round of the tournament, vaulting him up the leaderboard to seventh place at two-over-par 218 (82-73-63).
The remarkable turnaround saw Delanty improve by 19 strokes from his opening round to his final trip around The Pearl Club.
Meiby Leads Bearcats With Runner-Up Finish
While Delanty stole the spotlight on the final day, Simon Meiby provided McKendree with its highest individual finish of the tournament.
Meiby, ranked No. 65 nationally, opened with an even-par 72 before posting a three-over 75 in the second round. He saved his strongest showing for the finale, recording a five-under-par 67 to climb into second place at two-under-par 214.
His closing round featured a three-under 33 on the front nine and a two-under 34 coming home, allowing him to finish just two strokes behind individual medalist Samuel Ankelstam of Young Harris, who claimed the title at four-under-par 212.
Meiby's runner-up performance marked another strong showing for the Bearcats' standout golfer.
Wu and Traustason Join the Top-10 Party
McKendree's success extended well beyond its two lowest scorers, as Edison Wu and Tristan Traustason each secured top-10 finishes.
Wu put together one of the Bearcats' most consistent tournaments, following an opening-round 74 (+2) with a 73 (+1) before breaking par with a final-round 70 (-2). His three-round total of 217 (+1) earned him a share of fifth place.
Traustason, meanwhile, steadily improved throughout the competition. After beginning with a 79 (+7), he responded with an even-par 72 in the second round before finishing with a three-under-par 69. His 220 (+4) was good for a tie for eighth place.
Together, Meiby, Wu, Delanty and Traustason gave McKendree four golfers among the tournament's top eight finishers, a testament to the depth that powered the Bearcats to the championship.
Rounding Out the McKendree Lineup
Jack LeMatty and Parker Renken completed the main squad's tournament efforts.
LeMatty opened with a 75 (+3) and followed with a 73 (+1) before closing with a 79 (+7), finishing tied for 20th at 227 (+11).
Renken began with his best round of the event, a one-over-par 73, before recording rounds of 78 (+6) and 77 (+5). His 228 (+12) placed him in a tie for 26th.
Bearcat B Squad Claims Seventh
McKendree's second lineup also turned in a respectable showing, finishing seventh in the 12-team field at 45-over-par 909 (305-311-293), two strokes ahead of Kentucky Wesleyan's B squad.
Pe Nontarux paced the group with a tie for 12th place, carding rounds of 72 (E), 77 (+5) and 74 (+2) to finish at seven-over-par 223.
Thierry Boucher and Aidan O'Keefe shared 20th place at 11-over-par 227, taking different paths to the same finishing mark. Boucher saved his best for the final round, shooting a one-under-par 71 after consecutive rounds of 78, while O'Keefe improved with each outing, posting scores of 79, 75 and 73.
Harris Munro finished tied for 42nd at 16-over-par 232 (76-81-75), while Carter Rose earned a share of 57th at 22-over-par 238 (80-83-75).
Kyle Peck rounded out the McKendree B contingent in 67th place, finishing at 28-over-par 244 (83-81-80).
A Championship Finish
McKendree's final-round fireworks provided a fitting conclusion to the tournament, with the Bearcats turning a nine-over-par standing through 36 holes into a 10-under-par championship performance.
The 19-under-par closing round, highlighted by Delanty's 63 and Meiby's 67, showcased the team's scoring potential when firing on all cylinders.
By the time the final putts dropped at The Pearl Club, McKendree had not only secured the team trophy but had done so emphatically, finishing 20 strokes clear of its nearest challenger and placing four golfers inside the individual top 10.
