Lebanon, IL - A perfect afternoon capped by an overtime game-winner has earned Truman Carnine national recognition. The McKendree University freshman kicker was named the D2Football.com National Special Teams Player of the Week on Tuesday following the Bearcats' 46–43 victory over Quincy on Saturday at Leemon Field.
Carnine accounted for 14 points in the win, connecting on all three field-goal attempts from 38, 41, and 39 yards while converting each of his five extra-point tries. The Mt. Vernon, Illinois, native also handled kickoff duties, averaging 62.9 yards on eight kicks.
His contributions helped McKendree maintain its advantage throughout a back-and-forth Battle for the Land of Lincoln. Carnine's 38-yard field goal extended the Bearcats' lead in the second quarter, while his 41-yarder in the third quarter put McKendree back in front, 36–33.
After Quincy tied the game with 17 seconds remaining in regulation, Carnine delivered the deciding points in overtime. Johnnie Robinson intercepted a pass on the Hawks' opening possession, setting up McKendree's opportunity to finish the game. Carnine then split the uprights from 39 yards, securing the victory and keeping the Top Hat in Lebanon.
The national honor follows Monday's announcement that Carnine earned Great Lakes Valley Conference Special Teams Player of the Week recognition for the same performance.
Carnine becomes McKendree's first D2Football.com weekly honoree since punter Kaleb Barry received the National Special Teams Player of the Week award on October 23, 2023, following a 20–17 victory over Missouri S&T.
McKendree (2–3, 2–1 GLVC) remains home Saturday, October 10, to host Southwest Baptist for Homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Leemon Field.
