Indianapolis, IN - The McKendree University Women's Basketball team was back on the road Thursday, playing at the UIndy Greyhounds for the second time this season. McKendree (13-8, 10-5 GLVC) shot 50% in the third quarter, then held on despite a colder-shooting fourth to defeat the home-standing Greyhounds (5-19, 4-12 GLVC), 57-49.
The opening quarter was a back-and-forth battle from the jump. After falling behind early, McKendree found a spark when
Chloe White buried a three-pointer off a turnover, with
Emma Slings delivering the assist. Slings later connected from deep again, and
Kylie Moeller added a triple midway through the quarter to keep the Bearcats within striking distance.
Morgan Feil provided help late in the quarter, finishing through contact, while
Kyra Taylor knocked down free throws to help stabilize things. Despite the early exchanges, McKendree trailed just 17-15 after one in a tightly contested first 10 minutes.
The Bearcats began to settle in during the second quarter.
Baylie Parks scored inside to tie the game, and
Tessa Crawford followed with a pull-up jumper to swing momentum. Feil proved pivotal during a stretch, collecting multiple offensive rebounds and converting second-chance tries, including a three-point play that gave McKendree the lead. Taylor added a mid-range jumper in the closing minute, and Feil capped the half with a putback at the buzzer. That late sequence sent the Bearcats into the locker room ahead 31-26.
Coming out of halftime, McKendree delivered its most complete stretch of the night. Parks attacked early in the third, scoring in the paint and converting at the line. Slings drained a three off a turnover to stretch the margin to double digits, and Taylor followed with a strong finish inside. Feil continued to control the boards, finishing another second-chance bucket, while Moeller drilled a step-back three later in the quarter to push the lead to 13. The Bearcats' defensive pressure forced miscues and turned them into points, allowing them to take a 49-37 advantage into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was a slow finish, but the Bearcats were able to utilize that 12-point lead they'd built. Taylor converted a pair of free throws to halt a brief UIndy run, and Moeller capitalized on a turnover with a fast break layup that created separation on the scoreboard again. UIndy, though, continued to chip away at the deficit, and the Bearcats answered at the stripe, where Taylor and Feil combined to keep that category moving. Despite McKendree shooting 12.5% from the field in the final frame, the Bearcat defense limited Greyhound looks late and sealed the eight-point road conference win.
