McKendree Avoid Sweep in Season Opening Series

MILLIGAN, Tenn. – McKendree baseball avoids the sweep against Union, taking the second game of the series this past weekend at USA Stadium.

Game One | Union 4, McKendree 2

Carter Daniel (W: 1-0); Trey Cole (L: 0-1) | Save: Cole Lannom (1)

In the first game of the new season, McKendree (1-2, 0-0 GLVC) didn't wait long to get the offensive rolling. Three of the four runs came off a three-run homer from Noah Shuman in the second inning. Hunter Sherman would also launch one over the wall in the fourth to end the scoring for the Bearcats.

However, Union (3-3, 0-0 GSC) would respond by scoring in four straight innings to make the score 6-4 at the end of the fifth. They would later tack on two more in the seventh to end the game 8-4.
Max Meuli and Sherman led the team with two hits in the game. Sage McMinn also got a hit in the contest.
On the mound, Trey Cole got the start and had five strikeouts and gave up only four hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Game Two | McKendree 9, Union 6,

Calan Kujawa (W: 1-0); Takuma Sato (L: 0-1) | Save: Parker Johnson (1)

The Bulldogs held a 5-2 lead at the end of the second, but McKendree would keep them scoreless until they got one back in the bottom of the seventh.

Gavin Arseneau took advantage of a wild pitch in the first to put the Bearcats on the board first. In the following inning, it was a double by Shuman that pushed Javy Garcia over the plate.

Two sacrifice flies and two walks in the third fueled a four-run inning to take a 6-5 lead at the end of the third. Sherman accounted for the final three runs in the game. In the sixth he crossed the plate on a wild pitch, and in the seventh he doubled to get McMinn and Aresneau home.

Calan Kujawa gets the first win for the Bearcats. He had four strikeouts and only allowed one hit throughout his 4.1 innings. Parker Johnson is credited with the save after striking out two batters in his 1.0 inning.

Game Three | Union 4, McKendree 3

Nathan Myers (W: 1-0); Cameron Pidcock (L: 0-1)

In the final game of the series came down to the wire as the game was tied up 1-1, going into the sixth. The Bearcats struck first, getting two runs from Shuman and Kyle Richardson in the top of the sixth, however Union came back with three runs of their own to take the game.

Peyton Bittle also had a nice showing in the game getting two hits in his four at bats. Gabe Deaver also added a hit to the total as well.

Josh Dima kept the Bulldogs at bay only giving up one earned run and striking out seven in his first start of the season.
