Dima Becomes McKendree’s Division II Single Season Strikeout Leader in Split Against UMSL

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – McKendree baseball (15-23, 7-13 GLVC) sweeps the Saturday doubleheader against UMSL (20-17, 14-6 GLVC) to split the series at the UMSL Baseball Field this past weekend.

Game One | UMSL 10, McKendree 4
Brandon Johnson (W: 1-2), Trey Cole (L: 4-5)

In the first game of the series, Max Meuli was able to take an early lead in the top of the first inning with a fielder's choice that Peyton Bittle scored on. However, the Tritons would go on to score three in the second and one in the fifth before McKendree could respond in the sixth. Sage McMinn got the game within one with a two-run home run that carried over the right field wall.

UMSL went on to score six in the last three innings to extend the lead. The last run was scored by Meuli as he was brought home by a Quest Hull sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Javy Garcia, Gavin Arseneau and Bittle led the team with two hits each in the game.

Pitching for the Bearcats was Trey Cole as he started the game and went 6.2 innings with three strikeouts. Ben Amador came in for relief and pitched the last 1.1 innings where he only gave up two hits and struck out one.

Game Two | McKendree 10, UMSL 4
Luke Aubuchon (W:2-0), Eli Cartwright (L:6-2), Calan Kujawa (Save: 1)

The second game, McKendree got the hits flowing and took advantage of errors from the UMSL defense to take the first win of the day.

In the second inning, McMinn, Tyler Butash and Hunter Sherman all scored off multiple throwing errors that led to the Bearcats taking the first lead of the game. After a scoreless third, the fourth saw three more runs scored. With the bases loaded, Bittle earned a walk to force a run across. Gabe Deaver brought across another run on a fielder's choice, then Meuli had a sacrifice fly where Arseneau scored.

McKendree scored in the fifth where Hull and McMinn pulled off the double steal as McMinn stole home after the catcher threw it to second. Later that inning, Arseneau singled to bring in Hull. Deaver and Meuli shut the door on the game with RBI singles in the seventh.

Davis Beale started the game and went 1.2 innings and only gave up two hits. Luke Aubuchon came in for relief where he pitched 1.1 innings and was accredited with the win. He saw four batters with his time on the mound; he struck out one, and the defense was able to get the rest out. Calan Kujawa finished the last four innings to earn the save. He struck out two and only gave up five hits.

Game Three | McKendree 4, UMSL 1
Josh Dima (W:1-2), Bryce Nicolay (L:3-5)

Game three saw a pitching battle as both pitchers had complete games. Josh Dima ended up winning that battle as he only gave up two hits and struck out a total of 10 batters throughout the game. His efforts in the game broke the McKendree Division II single season strikeout record holder with his 70th strikeout.

Offensively, Deaver and McMinn both had RBI hits in the first inning to build a lead that would be held for the remainder of the game. Kyle Richardson added to the lead in the sixth with an RBI single; Garcia would get the last run across in the seventh with an RBI single to finish the game.

Meuli, Bittle, Sherman, and Hull also notched a hit in the game as well.

Game Four | UMSL 17, McKendree 2 (7 Inn.)
Garrett Brunstetter (W:4-0), Rhett Detering (L:2-3)

UMSL took the last game of the series to get the split. Sherman was the main source of offense going 2-3 with two RBIs. Arseneau, Bittle, Deaver, and Meuli also got hits in the game.

Rhett Detering started the game and went 1.1 innings. Adam Galdoni came in for 1.2 innings and struck out two in his time on the mound. Owen Dunn relieved him and went 2.1 innings and added a strikeout. Peyton Apps finished out the game and only gave up one hit.
