University Center, MI - McKendree University Football showed flashes of an emerging passing attack in Thursday night's 2026 season opener, but a dominant second quarter and an explosive Saginaw Valley State offense proved too much to overcome as the Bearcats fell 48-24 at Wickes Memorial Stadium.
Playing the Cardinals for the first time in program history, McKendree (0-1) was held scoreless in the opening quarter before Saginaw Valley State (1-0) erupted for 27 points in the second.The Bearcats found considerably more success offensively after halftime, scoring three touchdowns over the final 30 minutes, but could not slow an SVSU attack that finished with 557 yards of total offense.
STRONG START GIVES WAY TO CARDINAL SURGE
The final score did not reflect how competitive the opening 15 minutes were.
McKendree's defense stopped SVSU on downs to end the Cardinals' opening possession before the Bearcats responded with a 12-play, 72-yard march of their own. The drive reached the SVSU seven-yard line before McKendree came away empty on fourth down. The teams remained scoreless through one quarter despite combining for 187 yards and 13 first downs.
The complexion of the game changed quickly in the second quarter when Saginaw Valley State scored 27 unanswered points and repeatedly hurt McKendree with explosive plays.
After completing a 15-play, 93-yard drive early in the quarter, SVSU needed just one play to strike again when Connor Wolf connected with Braden Hill for a 52-yard touchdown. McKendree answered with a 10-play, 63-yard possession, capped by freshman Truman Carnine's 29-yard field goal to make it 14-3.
The Cardinals responded again, however, as Wolf found Matt Vaughn for a 58-yard touchdown. SVSU added another score with 18 seconds remaining in the half, sending McKendree to the locker room facing a 27-3 deficit.
BEARCAT PASSING GAME COMES ALIVE
McKendree's response after halftime provided one of the most encouraging stretches of the night, particularly from sophomore quarterback Kendrick Lyons and the Bearcats' young receiving corps.
After SVSU extended its advantage to 34-3, Lyons engineered a seven-play, 60-yard touchdown drive. Freshman Kendric Johnson finished it with his first collegiate touchdown reception, hauling in a 16-yard pass from Lyons.
The Cardinals answered, but McKendree went right back to work. The Bearcats traveled 70 yards in nine plays and nearly four minutes, with Lyons finding Johnson again from 11 yards out on the final play of the third quarter.
McKendree went 3-for-4 on third down in the quarter and scored touchdowns on both of its red zone opportunities while Lyons completed 8-of-13 passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns in the quarter alone.
The Bearcats added their third touchdown with 3:01 remaining. Starting from their own 20, McKendree covered 80 yards in six plays before Lyons connected with Quincy Hall Jr. for a six-yard score to produce the final 48-24 margin.
LYONS LEADS NEW-LOOK OFFENSE
Making the first start of his collegiate career, Lyons completed 19-of-34 passes for 259 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. That came after the East St. Louis alumnus entered the season with just seven career pass attempts and 62 passing yards.
Johnson made an immediate impact in his collegiate debut, catching four passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns while adding 52 yards on three kickoff returns. Hall led McKendree with seven receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown, while Aiden Jones added three catches for 66 yards.
The Bearcats' passing game accounted for 259 of their 317 total yards, with McKendree completing passes to six different receivers.
McKendree also protected the football throughout the night, committing no turnovers, while converting 6-of-13 third downs and scoring on four of its five trips inside the red zone.
EXPLOSIVE PLAYS, GROUND GAME FUEL SVSU
The biggest separation between the two teams came on the ground and through SVSU's ability to create chunk plays.
The Cardinals outrushed McKendree 249-58, averaging 5.4 yards per carry and scoring four rushing touchdowns. Devin Miles led the Cardinals with 113 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, while Obie Sanni added 87 yards and two scores on 13 attempts. McKendree, meanwhile, was limited to 2.6 yards per rushing attempt.
Wolf was equally efficient through the air, completing 14-of-19 passes for 308 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. SVSU averaged 16.2 yards per pass attempt and 22.0 yards per completion, with JT Webber (107 yards), Vaughn (102), and Hill (71) all producing significant gains through the air.
The result was a 557-317 advantage in total offense and an 8.6-yard advantage per offensive play for the Cardinals. SVSU also controlled possession for 34:33, including more than 11 minutes of the fourth quarter.
DEFENSIVELY FOR McKENDREE
Mylan Nettles paced the Bearcats with a career-high 11 tackles, including six solo stops, while senior linebacker Nick Bova totaled nine tackles and recorded McKendree's lone sack of the night. Darren Pennell added seven tackles.
Despite the final total, McKendree's defense did produce early resistance, keeping SVSU off the scoreboard throughout the first quarter and turning the Cardinals away on their opening possession. The challenge became containing an SVSU offense that produced scoring drives of 93, 52, 86, 58, 50, 73, and 75 yards during a seven-touchdown stretch spanning the second through fourth quarters.
The Bearcats ultimately leave Michigan at 0-1, but with tangible positives from a young offense that scored 21 second-half points, did not turn the football over, and saw Lyons account for three touchdowns in his first collegiate start.
