Women's Soccer Defends Leemon in Home Opening Win over Union

Bearcats begin 2-0-0 after Mauch secures pair of goals to lift squad over Bulldogs

LEBANON, Ill. | Leemon Field - A two-goal day for junior forward Maddie Mauch propelled McKendree University women's soccer to victory on Sunday afternoon, as the Bearcats held off Union (Tenn.), 2-1 to improve to 2-0-0 on the fall. McKendree once again began its home slate without a loss, which dates back beyond the website records (2005), holding its home turf and reputation true once again. The Bearcats continue their non-conference slate on Tuesday, September 1 with another home bout as Delta State comes to Leemon Field for a 10:00AM kick off. Non-conference play will be closed out on Thursday, September 3 with a quick road trip to Memphis to play Christian Brothers.

The battle against Union kicked off during a hot and humid stretch on Sunday afternoon, but that did not keep the Bearcats at bay. McKendree quickly got its footing as they pushed into the Bulldogs' third early on, firing 10 shots in the first half with four players tallying multiple shots on the day. The home squad broke through nearly 15 minutes into the contest as an initial ball out to Mauch allowed her to operate and slip past the defensive line, as she collected and fired for the 1-0 lead. McKendree held its one goal advantage at the intermission stretch.

Shortly into the second half, the Bearcats earned a free kick near mid field with senior defender Zoe Cormier stepping in to take it and after a flurry of attempts to move the ball, it found the feet of Mauch who turned, launched, and scored her second of the day. The Bulldogs managed to tally one score in the 69th minute, cutting the McKendree lead to one but the Bearcat defense held strong through the remainder of the contest for the victory.

Senior goalkeeper Peyton Baker collected five saves on her way to the win while Mauch led the offensive effort with six shots, four on-frame, and two goals. The effort marked her fourth career multi-goal game.
