ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The McKendree women's volleyball team dropped their first match out of three this weekend against Arkansas Tech University at the Holiday Inn Griffon Volleyball Invitational, making their record 2-6.
The Bearcats started the match swinging aggressively, going point for point with the Golden Suns. While being errorless within the first eight points, McKendree had a hot confidence in their game until Tech separated with five consecutive points, resulting in a point deficit for the Bearcats at 14-11. For the rest of the first set, Tech ratioed McKendree's service runs two to one, making it hard on the Bearcats to even the playing field.
The same momentum that pushed the Golden Sun's first set victory bled into the second set, stunning the Bearcats from a 6-0 lead at the beginning of the game. Tech had then racked up 13 points to McKendree's three, which were the Golden Sun's attacking errors. Some offensive heat from junior right side hitter Sara Niemerg and junior middle blocker Avery Guisinger gave the Bearcats some opportunity, but the lead Tech established in the beginning was too large to close. The Golden Suns took the second set 25-17.
McKendree adjusted in the third set, going point-for-point with Tech until the final five points. With a score of 22-21, the Golden Suns went on a serving run, closing the set 25-21.
