Lebanon, IL - Indianapolis may be leaving the Great Lakes Valley Conference, but on Saturday night, the McKendree University Football team was wanting to make the most of their last shot at the Greyhounds as a conference opponent.
Under the lights at Leemon Field, the Bearcats (1-2, 1-0) delivered their biggest statement in recent memory, answering every UIndy (1-3, 0-1) challenge before controlling the final six-plus minutes to secure a thrilling 35-31 victory in their conference and home opener.
It was more than McKendree's first win of the season.
It was a breakthrough against the program that has long served as the GLVC's measuring stick. It was a response to an 0-2 start.
On this night, the spotlight belonged to the Bearcats.
A DREAM START IN PRIME TIME
McKendree wasted little time giving the home crowd a reason to erupt.
On UIndy's opening possession, Jackson Barnhart forced a fumble that Darren Pennell scooped up and returned 41 yards for a touchdown. Just 1:56 into the game, McKendree had its first defensive touchdown of the season and a 7-0 lead.
After forcing a three-and-out, the Bearcats marched 65 yards in nine plays. Quarterback Kendrick Lyons finished the drive himself with a three-yard touchdown run, pushing McKendree's advantage to 14-0 with 8:17 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Greyhounds responded with a pair of field goals before a McKendree safety and a 58-yard touchdown pass from Nick Patterson to Cayden Olinger tied the game at 14 late in the second quarter.
UIndy had erased the early deficit. McKendree, however, never surrendered control.
LYONS AND JOHNSON DELIVER
The Bearcats opened the second half with one of their sharpest possessions of the night.
Facing third-and-12 near midfield, Lyons connected with Quincy Hall Jr. for 20 yards to extend the drive. Two plays later, he found Kendric Johnson for a 35-yard touchdown, restoring McKendree's seven-point advantage.
That connection became the defining matchup of the night.
Lyons completed 27 of 40 passes for 327 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. Johnson produced a career night, catching 10 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns.
UIndy answered Johnson's first score with a 94-yard touchdown drive, then capitalized on an interception to take its first lead on a 40-yard Andrew Herron field goal.
The Bearcats had watched a 14-point lead disappear, and for the first time all night, found themselves behind.
Their response was immediate.
McKendree drove 65 yards in eight plays, overcoming an ineligible receiver penalty before Jerry Richardson helped move the offense into the red zone. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Lyons connected with Kamren Schumacher for a two-yard touchdown that put the Bearcats back in front, 28-24.
ONE MORE ANSWER
UIndy regained the lead less than three minutes later when Patterson found Callen Okerson for a 48-yard touchdown.
Once again, McKendree answered.
Beginning at their own 25-yard line, the Bearcats put together their most important drive of the night. Lyons converted a pair of third downs with completions to Michale Sutton and Hall, then found Brylan Apholone for seven yards to move the chains at the UIndy 24.
On the next snap, Lyons connected with Johnson for the go-ahead touchdown.
Nine plays. Seventy-five yards. Four minutes and 15 seconds.
McKendree 35, UIndy 31.
The Greyhounds still had more than seven minutes to respond, but the Bearcat defense forced a three-and-out after UIndy began its next possession at the McKendree 40-yard line.
Then the offense finished the job.
NINETY-SEVEN YARDS TO FINISH IT
Protecting a four-point lead, McKendree took possession at its own three-yard line with 6:41 remaining.
UIndy never touched the ball again.
A roughing-the-passer penalty kept the drive alive before Lyons found Johnson for 13 yards and Daryle Jones Jr. for 11 more. On third-and-seven near midfield, Lyons connected with Izaias Primus for nine yards and another first down.
Following the two-minute timeout, Primus broke free for 12 yards to seal the result and send the Bearcats into victory formation.
The final possession covered 58 official yards, but its significance extended well beyond the box score. McKendree possessed the ball for the final 6:41, beginning at its own three and advancing deep enough into UIndy territory to end the night with three kneel-downs.
MORE THAN JUSTÂ A WIN
The Bearcats were outgained 459-368. They rushed for only 41 yards, committed three turnovers and allowed UIndy to average 7.3 yards per play, but were still able to come away with the victory.
McKendree forced two critical fumbles, scored defensively, converted all four of its second-half touchdown opportunities and finished a perfect 2-for-2 in the red zone. The Bearcats also went 5-for-10 on third down and converted their only fourth-down attempt.
Most importantly, they refused to fold.
McKendree is now 1-0 in the GLVC. The Bearcats own a signature victory, a surge of momentum and tangible proof that they can stand toe-to-toe with the conference's biggest name.
One win does not complete a season, but some wins can change one.
Under the bright lights of Leemon Field, this felt like one of them.
