After playing the last two years for the McKendree men's basketball program, David Newton will make the transition to coach in 2016-17. Newton will serve as a student assistant for the Bearcats and will assist in on-court coaching and will have game-day responsibilities.Â
Newton, from Rochelle, Ill., spent two seasons as a center for McKendree. He played in 39 games with two career starts for the Bearcats and averaged 4.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per contest. Possessing a soft shooting touch around the basket, Newton made 59.6 percent of his field goal attempts in a McKendree uniform. As a senior in 2015-16, he led the Bearcats in both field goal percentage (61.5 percent) and blocked shots (11).Â
A senior at McKendree, Newton is working toward completion of his bachelor's degree in business administration.Â
