(LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. 11)- The McKendree University women's basketball team held off a second half rally by American International College (Mass.) on Saturday night to earn a 60-59 win in the consolation game at the United Electric Tip-Off Classic in Louisville, Ky.
The Bearcats improved to 4-1 overall and will travel to Romeoville, Ill., on Monday, November 14th to play future Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Lewis University at 7 p.m.
Sophomore guard
Brittany Willis (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) led McKendree with 11 points, while junior forwards
Courtney Harris (Wildwood, Mo./St. Joseph Academy) and
Shelby Woelfel (Jerseyville, Ill./Jerseyville) each had 10 points. Freshman guard
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill., Edwardsville) was also named to the All-Tournament team and had nine points.
The Bearcats controlled the tempo in the first half and led by as many as 12 in the first half. The McKendree defense held the Yellowjackets to 18.2 percent (6-33) shooting in the first half of play, and held a 28-18 lead at the break.
McKendree carried its momentum into the second half and used a 12-0 run to build an 18 point lead, 40-22, with 14:22 left to play. American International outscored the Bearcats 19-10 over the next seven minutes to cut the lead to single digits, 50-41, but McKendree converted four of its six free throws down the strecth to hold on to the win.
Rhea Pascal led all players with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Yellowjackets, while Sarah Noble and Marie Li Sicard scored 13 and 10, respectively.
