(LEBANON, Ill., Nov. 12)—The McKendree University hockey team took both ends of a weekend series on the road against Western Illinois University, winning Saturday night's contest by a score of 5-1.
Sophomore center/wing
Carlos Galvan (Mulvane, KS/Mulvane) closed out a productive weekend by leading the Bearcats with a pair of goals. Galvan had two goals and four assists in McKendree's 11-1 win on Friday night over the Leathernecks. McKendree improves to 7-8-1 on the season and will return to action Dec. 2 on the road against Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.
After a scoreless first period, McKendree broke the ice when junior wing
Nic Rolla (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) scored an unassisted, short-handed goal midway through the second period. Galvan added an unassisted goal in the final minute of the period to extend the margin to 2-0 before Western Illinois registered its only goal of the game with just seconds left on the clock to pull within 2-1 heading into the second intermission.
Early in the third period, freshman center/wing Eric Davis scored on the power play to help McKendree regain a two-goal advantage. Senior defenseman
Derek Hartung (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) stretched the margin to 4-1 for the Bearcats midway through the period before Galvan closed out the contest on a power-play goal with 4:25 to play.
For the second consecutive night, junior
Nathan Campo (Westmont, IL/Downers Grove South) stopped all but one Western Illinois shot to pick up the victory in goal for McKendree. Campo had 36 saves in the Saturday outing.
