(CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky., Feb. 26)—The McKendree University baseball team took one of two games on Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader at Campbellsville University in Kentucky. The Bearcats were defeated in the opener 13-3 before rebounding with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
With its game two win, McKendree was able to snap a six-game losing streak. The Bearcats are now 3-9 on the season and will play a single game Sunday at Campbellsville to wrap up a three-game weekend series. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m. ET.
In Saturday's first game, Campbellsville sprinted to a 4-0 lead after two innings before McKendree cut the deficit in half in the top of the third. Junior outfielder Brandyn Snider (Fielden, IL/Jersey Community) (Fieldon, Ill./Jersey Community) reached on an error to lead off the frame. He stole second base and came around to score on a two-run homer by senior outfielder Dan Corwin (St. Louis, MO/DeSmet) (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet). The host Tigers responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third to regain a four-run advantage.
McKendree's final run of the contest came in the fourth inning. Junior infielder Ronnie Calvird (Farmington, MO/Park Hills Central) (Farmington, Mo./Park Hills Central) singled with two outs. Snider was hit by a pitch, and both runners moved up a base following a balk. Calvird scored when freshman infielder Tony Kossina (Millstadt, IL/Belleville West) (Millstadt, Ill./Belleville West) reached on an error.
Campbellsville closed out the game with a run in the fifth inning and six more in the sixth. The contest marked the Tigers' home opener for 2011.
The Bearcats managed just three hits off Campbellsville pitchers. In addition to Corwin's home run and Calvird's single, Kossina also had a single in the game. Senior right-hander Nolan Martz (East Alton, IL/Roxana) (East Alton, Ill./Roxana) allowed four earned runs and six hits over three innings in taking the loss on the mound. Martz walked one and struck out one.
Freshman right-hander Ben Dallesasse (DeKalb, IL/DeKalb) (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) earned his first collegiate victory in game two for McKendree. Dallesasse pitched the first four innings and gave up one run on just four hits with three strikeouts. Junior righty Kraig Interial (Plainfield, IL/Meridian) (Plainfield, Ill./Meridian) survived a threat from Campbellsville in the seventh inning to pick up his first save in a McKendree uniform.
After the Tigers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning, McKendree rallied with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth inning, Corwin and senior catcher Kyle Moll (Mascoutah, IL/Mascoutah) (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) led off with consecutive singles. Sophomore infielder Patrick Thole (Carlyle, Ill./Breese Central) walked with one out to load the bases. Sophomore first baseman Rob Beatty (Millstadt, IL/Belleville West) (Millstadt, Ill./Belleville West) then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Corwin with the tying run.
Corwin then delivered a run-scoring single in the fifth inning to bring home senior infielder Daniel Solis (Chicago, IL/De La Salle) (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle), who reached base on a one-out walk. Corwin, Moll and senior infielder Andy Kuehn (Mascoutah, IL/Mascoutah) (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) each had two hits in the contest for McKendree.
